Gears of War developer Epic Games has admitted that it has 'neglected' the Unreal franchise, which accelerated the studio to greatness ever since the first in the series, in recent years.

Epic Games' President, Mike Capps, told IndustryGamers that the decision was a side-effect of focusing on the Gears of War series so much.

'It's been a long time since we shipped an Unreal game, and it's an awfully loved franchise that we hold pretty dear here,' said Capps.

'We haven't been giving it the attention it deserves because we've been focusing on Gears of War and we're still a relatively small company...At some point you wonder why we don't rename the engine the Gears Engine or something,' he said.

Capps didn't offer any official confirmation on a new Unreal game, but did say that a new installment in the hugely successful series would make financial sense.

'We've been sort of focused on making new properties, which you've seen with Shadow Complex, Bulletstorm and Infinity Blade, but sometimes I think just as a businessman that maybe we should be spending some more time with our existing franchises.'

Speaking to Kotaku over the weekend, Capps revealed that Bulletstorm didn't make any money for the studio - though it was still proud of the work.

Epic has previously commented that it was driven to console development because of rising piracy on the PC platform.

2007's Unreal Tournament 3 was the last entry in the Unreal series, which was released to middling reception. Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
