Nintendo is working to bring DS titles on to the Wii U's gamepad through the system's Virtual Console service.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata made the announcement and stated that the company had overcome technical hurdles that were holding them back from doing this sooner.

The only image for DS games working on the system is currently from a presentation slide in Iwata's deck showing Brain Age running on the gamepad and a list of games that will be coming to the Virtual Console has not been released.

Instead of using the two screen setup of the Wii U to emulate the two screen setup of the DS, the DS screens are instead rendered side by side on the gamepad. This also preserves the screen ration of the original device if the gamepad is then turned on its side.

Alongside the announcement, Iwata revealed that Nintendo plans to prioritise the Wii U's unusual controller and ensure that software is being made that takes full advantage of the tablet device.

Earlier this week, a rumour circulated that Nintendo will be releasing free mini-games as smartphone apps. Iwata confirmed that the company is working on smartphone development which is leaning towards an app to advertise Nintendo products, but he also added that he has 'not given any restrictions to the development team, even not ruling out the possibility of making games or using our game characters'.
