Asus G60Vx - Gaming Laptop

Manufacturer: Asus
UK Price (as reviewed): £1,346.59 (inc. VAT)
US Price (as reviewed): N/A

The first time we saw the Asus G60Vx, the new Republic of Gamers laptop, it was in a Lamborghini showroom in one of the poshest parts of London, and sitting the G60Vx in front of some of the world’s most desirable supercars had the effect of making it look cheap.

This goes both ways though; its plastic chassis couldn’t help but look cheap next to the carbon ceramic brakes, carbon fibre trim, fat tyres and razor blade bodywork, but cheap too in terms of cost. Sat in front of a bright orange Gallardo LP560-4 (on the road price £168,500), the G60Vx, costing more than 100 times less, at £1,347, seemed terrific value.

The G60Vx is a Republic of Gamers laptop that sports a 16in screen and GeForce GTX 260M graphics

Still, it's been a while since we've taken a look at a gaming laptop here on bit-tech, so we thought it was high time to see what's changed. We've long admired Asus' Republic of Gamers (RoG) motherboards, so wanted to see what was involved with an RoG laptop, and we were also curious to see what Nvidia's newest mobile GPU, the GeForce GTX 260M was like. A few weeks later and we've received our review unit to look at (the Asus, we mean, Lamborghini haven’t got back to us yet).

The core specification (which you can see in full, below) certainly looks appealing - a reasonably pacey Core 2 Duo CPU at the heart of things, 4GB RAM and gaming graphics courtesy of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 260M. Asus also includes a Blu-Ray drive and there's a HDMI output. All good signs, but despite being a 16in laptop, on paper, the screen's resolution of 1,366 x 768 struck us as quite low. Still, it made us all the more curious to see how the machine would fare.
