Cables and Connectors

Since we used the PSUs rather extensively before this review, finding the exact set of cables it came with proved impossible in our messy abode, so we rounded up what we could for the pictures below to give you an idea. The official list of the 950W model is below.

Affixed cables include:

  • 60cm cm 24-pin ATX cable
  • 60 cm 8-pin EPS12V CPU power cable
  • 60 cm 4+4-pin EPS12V CPU power cable
  • Two 60 cm 6+2-pin PCI-Express cables

Modular cables include:

  • Four 50cm 6+2-pin PCI-Express cables
  • Four SATA cables with four connectors at 45cm, 55cm, 65cm and 75cm
  • One molex cable with three connectors at 45cm, 55cm and 65cm
  • One molex cable with connectors at 45cm, 55cm, 65cm and a floppy connector at 75cm
Enermax throws in a nice array of cables, but it's very PCI-Express graphics heavy and at a maximum of 75cm for the SATA, this could be a tad short for some very large cases, or elaborate cable routing, but for the most part it should be fine as excessive length is just as bad.

Both 4+4-pin and 8-pin EPS12V power connectors are tethered to the PSU, which for most of us means we'll have to hide one unfortunately, and while there are plenty of SATA, there's no variety and no one or two plug SATA cables for variation.

Generally all round the black and yellow striped braid is of very good quality and is the right diameter for the cables within. The heatshrinking to keep it all in place is also very secure, depsite the fact we're almost certain it doesn't resort to gluing it all in place as well. Unfortunately the EPS12V and PCI-Express cables tethered to the PSU get this sort of overlapping braid keeping them together until half way down the cable, making it far more difficult to tidy the excess cable if you don't need both. We can't understand why Enermax continues to do this, no one else does and it means the two cables can only be separated so far.

On the upside, the connectors are all very good - the PCI-Express 6+2-pin use proper +2 cables, rather than just a loop back into the main connector, in addition to the fact the red PCI-Express connectors are easy to differentiate compared to the EPS12V 8-pin connector. The molex cables have the push-release plastic bits and the SATA connectors are of the 90 degree variety, but the gaps between the connectors are a large 10cm, which is far too much for hard drives stacked on top of each other, so they need to be alternated.
