Facebook is expected to reveal a new News Feed design at an event at its Menlo Park headquarters on Thursday 7 March.

Invitations sent out to selected media invited attendees to "Come see a new look for News Feed", giving a pretty clear indication of what the event will be about.

The News Feed is the 'homepage' of Facebook where users land after logging on or clicking the Facebook logo. The desktop version currently shows a tailored selection of users' status updates, pictures, videos and more in a long, largely chronologically ordered single column. Off to the right is a real-time news Ticker that shows every bit of activity that your friends have posted. Meanwhile the mobile version shows just a single column with the choice to have either the 'top stories' or most recent stories shown.

Facebook hasn't hinted at what the new News Feed might look like or add in terms of features. However TechCrunch did recently report that it had seen a new mobile News Feed design that looked like a cross between Flipboard and Microsoft Metro, with content filling the entirety of the screen and Facebook's trademark blue logo hidden from view.

Facebook also recently trialled a new profile page Timeline, which reduces the number of columns from two to one, and rearranges some of the content at the top of the page. This is expected to be rolled out worldwide at some point in the near future. Meanwhile the company also recently launched its new search function called Facebook Graph Search, which uses user's profile information to tailor web search results.

Will the 7 March event reveal a unified approach for all these features? We'll find out 10am PST (6pm GMT).
