Dell has kicked off the new year with the announcement of a 27in Quad HD ultra-slim monitor with high dynamic range (HDR) capabilities, with the promise of a March launch for around £684.

Unveiled by Dell just ahead of its formal introduction at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the imaginatively named Dell 27 Ultrathin monitor is aimed at those looking for cutting-edge technology. Based on an as-yet unconfirmed panel type, though with 178-degree viewing angles in-plane switching (IPS) seems likely, the 27in monitor offers a 2,560 x 1,440 (Quad HD) native resolution with support for 99 percent of the sRGB colour gamut.

A bigger claim to fame for Dell's new monitor is support for high dynamic range (HDR) content, though this comes with a fairly clear caveat: It's not the same HDR standard you'll find on consumer TVs but something Dell has developed itself. While this, the company claims, improves the contrast and colour range impressively, it's not yet clear whether HDR content designed for TVs will display correctly while running on the monitor. The display includes 400 nit brightness, 1,000:1 contrast, and a claimed 6ms response time.

The Ultrathin monitor includes a 'smart' base, where you'll find the power switch and control buttons, along with a USB Type-C connection on the rear for video, audio, and power connectivity to compatible devices. An additional video and audio input takes the form of an HDMI 2.0 port, for devices without USB Type-C support, while there's an analogue audio output for connection to an external amplifier or soundbar.

Full specifications of the Dell 27 Ultrathin, including just how thin it actually is, have not yet been released, with Dell expected to reveal more closer to the display's launch on March 23rd when it will retail for $700 (around £684 including VAT.)
