HP has issued a voluntary battery recall for around 70,000 litium-ion batteries that it claims are a potential fire hazard.

The recall comes after there were two separate reported incidents where the batteries overheated and ruptured, resulting in a fire that caused minor property damage. No injuries were reported according to the announcement from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The laptops affected by the recall include models from the Pavillion, Presario and Compaq ranges and includes 21 models in total. HP also said that the batteries had been sold separately as well. If you purchased a laptop with one of these batteries, or a separate replacement battery, between August 2007 and March 2008 then HP advises you to validate your battery to see if its affected by the recall. If it is, HP will offer a free replacement in exchange for the potentially hazardous one.

We hoped we had heard the last of the endless slew of battery recalls during 2007 and 2008, which saw millions of batteries returned to nearly all of the major notebook manufacturers. HP said that this particular recall is not related to any previous battery recall, but it neglected to mention the manufacturer of the affected batteries. It did however note that they were manufactured in China.
