Everyone has been speculating lately as to what AMD's price drops would be like upon the release of Conroe. Well, we can now stop the guessing, as HKEPC Hardware has managed to get a hold of the upcoming price table.

In the recent months there have been a couple drafts floating around, none of which contained the FX-62. However, this latest chart shows that the flagship of the AMD line will indeed drop by $200USD, from $999 to $799. Many of the other processors will receive an even more generous price slashing, including the X2 5000+ (AM2) dropping from $649 to $282.

This is a sharp drop and illustrates the sharp blade of the bleeding edge, as the chip came out barely a couple months ago. The price changes will be effective as of 24th July - the day that Intel's Core 2 Duo processors are set to go on sale.

For those who still think that edge is a great place to walk on, never fear: There are some new details released about the second Socket AM2 offering from the FX line, the Athlon 64 FX 64. It will come as no surprise to say that the chip is clocked at 3GHz with 2x1MB cache and a 1GHz HTT, which is certainly no weakling.

The chip doesn't pay in wattage for its speed increase over its brethren, either - it weighs in at a comfortable 125 watts max TDP. We'll look forward to testing this new offering as soon as we can get our hands on it, so stay tuned. It'll be interesting to see if it is enough to take the performance lead over the Core 2 Duo X6800. One thing is for certain, it's going to be a tall order for AMD to match Core 2 Duo in multimedia tests.

Many of you have mentioned in the forums that your next purchase will be based on performance per quid more than new technology. Will these cuts be enough to make you buy an AMD, or are they not enough to sway you from Intel's incredibly impressive Core 2 Duo chips? Are you upset that you just dropped well over £400 on a new X2 5000+? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place.
