Consoles get modded

Black 360 controller. Hmm.

A quick couple of fun mods for you in the run up to Chrimbo.

What do you do when you like your nice, white Xbox 360 controller, but you yearn for something different?

Well, you break out the vinyl die and go to town, obviously.

Alcaron over at Blogspot has taken his controller apart and put a really nice black finish on his 360 controller. We've seen people vinyl dying components for the PC for ages now, and it's cool to see the same principles applied to consoles.

Meanwhile, Steve at DeadlyComputer has been hand-painting his Wii. Not content with the pearlescent white casing of this year's must have Chrimbo prezzy, he has decked out his in a back and gold Zelda-themed Triforce motif.

The blog is interesting for the glimpse inside the Wii's inner workings.

Check them out, then let us know what you think over in the forums.

The XBOX pad one isn't that much of a mod really at all.

The Wii however has a few problems, the Triforce doesn't look right, its either mis-shaped or should be more angled with the top of the case.

Also, the screw bit for it is a standard security style, I have 5 different sizes!

(PS: its consoles not Consoels.

Agreed. I did the same thing to a Dreamcast pad back in the day...it's just a paint job rather than a fully fledged "mod".

The Wii looks ok, but it's not really that adventurous.

I'm not a massive fan of everything being 'iPod white' nowadays, and the 360 controller looks pretty smart. Sure, it's no full-on hardware mod but it's very well done and looks just like the original series. The Wii isn't to my taste, but I do look forward to Nintendo releasing a black/lime green version.

I've got two joypad shells (a black and an orange shell) I need to swap out on my 360. I'm not too convinced on the quality of the shells yet, I may end up swapping them back to the plain white.

OT, but just out of interest, what make are they? I'm tempted by a Shock! DS Lite shell (I know they make PSP/Xbox pad shells too) - if your pad shell is the same make, and you're saying quality aint great, maybe I'll save my money...

Paint jobs on the Wii controller and console look horrible... Looks like they threw about 3 or 4 layers of wet paint on top of each other, and let it try... Most certainly not the type of quality I would expect from an experienced modder...

My sentiments exactly!!!! The xbox "mod" big whoopdey doo he made a white controller black so what? At least it was a good all over job though! But its nothing special. The wii mod sucks ass though!!! All the guy had too do was paint his wii black and spray some gold triangles on it and he still managed to **** it up!! not impressive at all, prehapes we've gotten used to the high quality of the PC mods on here as such console modes have no place. Reserve them to wii_mods.com as stuff

Something other than boring white, I never liked the iPod white as you call it either. Anadoized aluminum or brushed stainless are more of my thing, after they release the Wii with the DVD in it I think thats what Ill do.

There's my 360 controller mod with graphical directions on taking it apart. :p
And I actually had to mod to black d-pad and analogue sticks to fit.

I think that guy used that spray on rubber stuff, has a bit of a rubbery look to it.

EDIT: Actually that would be a fantastic idea for the Wii mote, no more controllers flying across the room :p

Yeah kinda dissappointed at that article, I've been involved with console modding for awhile (cosmetic and electronic) vinyl dye on a controller isn't near as good as some of the mods I've seen done. However I will say it turned out well!

A black Xbox 360 looks interesting. I myself might invest the time to follow one of these mods on my own 360 at some point.

I've got the onyx and orange from Decal Girl
As soon as I've switched them I'll post some comments on the quality of the shells (probably won't be until after chrimbo)

Isn't it meant to be BLACK and Gold, not BACK and Gold?
