Got wood? ZapWizard does - a Wood iPod that is!
iPod covers made from wood have been done before, most recently by
Peter Kinne. However, until now, they have just been boxes into which you place your stock iPod. Never one to follow convention, Josh Driggs, also known as ZapWizard, has taken the concept of a Wood iPod to the next level.
"As part of Project Redwood I am also applying a wood finish to just about everything on my desk to have a matching set. And the iPod was not excluded," said Driggs in his
Worklog. "I did not want to simply apply a wood veneer, or a fake finish to the iPod. I wanted to use real wood,"
Hand-carved from solid African Padauk hardwood using only his trusty Dremel, a keen eye and a steady hand, the casing is an exact replica of the original part, right down to the clips that hold it in place.
The wood is only 2mm thick and has three coats of Envirotex Lite to protect the wood and also give it a fabulous glossy finish.
The patented iPod click wheel didn't escape without a veneer in the same African Padauk, the slightly lighter red colour providing a nice contrast with the darker case.
If you want to see how it was made, you can follow the step-by-step construction in the
Worklog and you can check out the rest of ZapWizard's amazing woodwork in his
