HTC to launch Viveport VR subscription service tomorrow

HTC has announced that Viveport, its pay-monthly subscription service which allows users to 'check out' five VR packages a month, goes live tomorrow.

HTC has announced that Viveport, a subscription service for virtual reality games and 'experiences', is to launch tomorrow, and all Vive owners will receive a free month to try it out.

Scheduled to coincide with the device's officially recognised first birthday, Viveport is designed to give Vive owners access to a wider range of entertainment while also giving financially troubled HTC a valuable recurring revenue stream it currently so badly lacks. Sadly for those eager for the VR equivalent of Netflix, though, it's hardly all-you-can eat: For the £6.99 monthly subscription fee, users are given access to just five applications from the 50 on offer; at the end of the month, these five applications can be 'returned' like a library book and another five selected.

'We believe Viveport is the place where customers will start their journey into new virtual reality experiences,' burbled Rikard Steiber, president of HTC's dedicated Viveport arm. 'Now, fans in over 30 countries will join us on a fantastic voyage, as they get to experience amazing VR Apps published by the best content creators in the industry.'

In addition to the software available through the subscription, HTC has promised to offer exclusive content including 'Viveport Premiers,' a dedicated community site, and an updated Vive Home system which includes 'the debut collection of objects, [and the ability to] experience streaming media with the new web browser widget,' among other new features.

More information on the service, including a link to pre-register ahead of tomorrow's launch, is available on the official website.
