DAAMIT confuses with X2K line

ATI's X2000 series is here already, in the forum of the Mobility Radeon X2300. Well, at least, sort of.

Now appearing at DAAMIT.com, the Mobility Radeon X2300 is, as you'd expect, a notebook part. However, don't let the X2k label bamboozle you - the 2300 is really an X1400 (M64).

So why the rename? Well, it's all about the architecture, isn't it. Those in the know tell us that it's part of ATI/AMD's strategy to stun us into purchasing a low-end part that looks like it's related to the high-end part - rather like the GeForce FX 5200 back in the day.

However, the confusion doesn't end there. The X2300 HD is actually based on a new RV550 core (M71) and will sport AMD's Universal Video Decoder, an add-on to Avivo that should allow even puny low-end parts to hardware decode HD video content.

And that is quite apart from the X2300 cards that will be based, as the INQ reported previously, on RV610.

So that's three cards with the same number based on three different chipsets. Good to see that the merger with AMD hasn't killed ATI's marketing department. Let us know your thoughts over in the forums.
