Intel Quad core before the year is done

Intel's Kentsfield will now launch in 2006.

Intel has announced that its desktop quad-core chip - Kentsfield - will be in the machines of gamers before the year is out.

Kentsfield is two Conroes shunted together and packaged up, making for four cores of low-power love. It was scheduled to come out in 2007, but Paul Otellini, Intel's CEO, announced yesterday that it was being brought forward.

Clovertown, Intel's quad-core server chip (which uses four Woodcrest cores) has also been shunted forward.

AMD has an initiative called 4x4, which puts two FX-62s on one motherboard. Intel appears to be going a step further and putting two processors on the same package! Hopefully, buying just one chip should be a bit cheaper than buying two.

The availability of quad-core will be good news for hardware enthusiasts that want to do a bit of everything at once.

We reviewed Conroe here, and decided it was a rather stonking processor.
