Developer Rocksteady has confirmed the long-suspected news that Catwoman will be a playable character in upcoming sequel, Batman: Arkham City.

The news comes via Gamespot, who've revealed that Catwoman will have her own side-story that runs throughout the single-player campaign.

Rather than attempting any heroics, Catwoman's goal in the game will be to exploit the chaos in Arkham to steal a number of valuable artifacts.

Catwoman will have a new arsenal of tools and abilities at her disposal, including a whip that lets her swing across rooftops and her own version of Batman's cowl, called Thief Vision. A new scoring system will come into play too, rewarding players for agility and sneakiness.

The Catwoman missions are said to take up approximately ten per cent of the total game, though players are also able to switch between Batman and Catwoman while exploring the city to reach new areas.

Batman: Arkham City is currently set for a October 21st release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and is a sequel to the much-loved Batman: Arkham Asylum. Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the forums.
