World of Tanks developer Wargaming has bought Day 1 Studios, the studio behind F.E.A.R. 3 and Fracture, for $20m.

As a result of the takeover, Day 1 Studios has been renamed Wargaming West.
The Chicago-based developer will be tasked with working on an unannounced console game and the acquisition will allow Wargaming to branch out from its free-to-play PC MMO routes.

'The move into console game developement is a huge step for Wargaming as we begin to expand our presence into new platofrms,' said Wargaming chief executive Victor Kislyi.

Wargaming West has also launched a hunt for new staff to join its ranks following the announcement.

Wargaming's flagship title, World of Tanks, managed to raise its player-base to approximately 45 million in 2012, with a peak of 600,000 playing simultaneously on one Russian server. Development on the game is still continuing with a patch adding 17 Chinese tanks to the fray earlier this month.

Founded in 1998, the studio released its breakout tank MMO hit in 2011. It is currently working on spin off titles World of Warships and World of Warplanes, the latter of which has entered its closed beta. Both titles are aiming for a release later this year.
