Blizzard has included an updated DirectX path in the latest beta of its upcoming World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, bringing DX11 to WoW.

Enabling DirectX 11 in WoW: Cataclysm requires the appropriately powerful hardware, as well as some tinkering with shortcuts as the mode isn't officially rolled out yet.

The appropriately titled PC Games Hardware have detailed how to enable DirectX 11 in WoW: Cataclysm, so check out the instructions below.

Expand a shortcut to the woW.exe with "-d3d11". Alternatively, open the "Config.wtf" in "\ World of Warcraft \ Beta \ WTF" and add the line SET gxApi "d3d11" (with quotes)

We haven't tried it ourselves yet, but judging by the comparison screenshots the new graphical effects offered within WoW aren't spectacular. Spells and characters now cause reflections in lava and water - that's about it.

That said, Cataclysm is still in beta, so hopefully we'll see some further updates in the future - as well as the quashing of the few graphical bugs that DX 11 mode can currently cause in WoW.
