BioWare's sprawling sci-fi RPG Mass Effect franchise is being made into an anime feature film.

The EA-owned studio is teaming up with FUNimation Entertainment, the leading distributor of Japanese animation in North America, in order to create the film.

Executive producer of the series, Casey Hudson, said: 'We have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us.'

The anime is said to be based on the Mass Effect universe, but neither party has confirmed whether the film will follow Commander Shepard and the plot of the games. However, FUNimation has said that the anime will be exploring 'a new chapter to this vast sci-fi world.'

CEO and President of FUNimation, Gen Fukunaga, said: 'It is thanks to the enormous and passionate Mass Effect fan base that this movie is made possible.'

This news follows the announcement made in June 2010 that BioWare and FUNimation were also about to begin work on an anime adaptation of Dragon Age.

Production of the film has already begun and it's scheduled for release in summer 2012.
