The shortlist for the 2013 Independent Games Festival has been announced.

A panel of expert judges, including several veteran indie games developers, whittled down more than 580 entries for the 15th annual festival. A combined $60,000 will be awarded to the winners of the seven categories during the award ceremony in March.

The coveted Seumas McNally Grand Prize which has been won by Fez, Super Meat Boy, Braid and Minecraft in previous years and boasts a $30,000 prize will be between Hotline Miami, FTL: Faster Than Light, Cart Life, Little Inferno and Kentucky Route Zero.

This year's awards will also include the Excellence in Narrative category for the first time, with finalists for this including Thirty Flights of Loving, Dys4ia, Gone Home and additional nominations for Cart Life and Kentucky Route Zero.

The titles in the full list of finalists will all be available to play at the IGF Pavilion during Game Developers Conference 2013 in San Francisco. All finalists will also have the option to receive a distribution agreement for Steam. Voting for the main competition finalists will start in February.

The shortlist for the Microsoft Studios Prize is yet to be decided from the list of all IGF entrants and the IGF Student Showcase award winners will be announced next week. Previous winners of the student category include Portal predecessor Narbacular Drop.

The IGF was established in 1999 to help raise the profile of independent game development by UBM Tech's Game Network.
