Apple and Google have both removed a game from their mobile app stores that encouraged children to perform cosmetic surgery on a girl who "has so much extra weight that no diet can help her."

Plastic Surgery for Barbie, was marked as being suitable for children aged 9 and over yet tasked players with carrying out liposuction on the character's "six problem areas".

"In our clinic she can go through a surgery called liposuction that will make her slim and beautiful," the game's description reads.

Understandably there has been a strong negative reaction to the game and Apple and Google have responded to remove it.

Not helping the game's cause is that it isn't actually sanctioned by the owner of the Barbie name, Mattel. In a statement the company said, "At Mattel, we take our commitment to children seriously and work hard to ensure there are no unauthorized uses of our brands that may be unsafe or inappropriate for children."

A similar app call Plastic Surgery Barbara appeared shortly after the original game was pulled but this is also no longer available.
