The Oculus Rift is unlikely to manage its previously promised 2015 consumer release according to the company founder.

Talking at SXSW, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey backed down from previous comments that the headset would be released in 2015 unless something went 'terribly wrong'.

Luckey stated that the company has not got anything specific to announce with regards to a release date and that nothing has gone wrong, but instead attributes the delay to the increased number of opportunities the company has seen following its $2bn acquisition by Facebook.

Oculus was acquired by the social media giant last year and the deal has allowed the company to hire 300 new staff and be more ambitious with the project in general.

When asked if Luckey still believed the Oculus Rift would be the best headset for its price point in light of other virtual reality device announcements, he remained confident.

I'd love for it to change because it means there is something even better out there. But I think that's unlikely right now,' said Luckey.

Since the Oculus Rift's Kickstarter fuelled inception, other players have turned their attentions to the virtual reality game, including Sony with Project Morpheus and Valve with its recently announced Vive.
