The next iteration of the Call of Duty series has been officially announced.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, developed by Infinity Ward, will be launched on November 5 this year and is headed for the PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Playstation 4 and next generation platforms.

Ghosts was accidentally outed by Tesco last week which posted a listing for the title along with the game's box-art on its online store. Further details on the title will be revealed at Microsoft's next generation console press event on May 21.

Other information revealed by Activision boasts that Ghosts will feature an all-new world, story and characters in the game. A live action teaser trailer has also been released, although it gives no further hints other than the characters are likely to be wearing masks.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be powered by a new engine built by Infinity Ward and the developer sees the new console generation as a chance to start afresh with the franchise.

'Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we’re not resting on our laurels,' said Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin. 'We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we’re building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players.'

Listings for pre-orders of Ghosts have already started popping up with retailers across the country.
