Valve has released Portal for free on Steam until September 20th.
Valve has released Portal for free on Steam today, giving the award-winning puzzle game away for zero pennies on both PC and Mac.
The promotion is part of a
Learn with Portals games education initiative which Valve is involved in.
'
One of the biggest challenges in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math is capturing the students’ imaginations long enough for them to see all of the possibilities that lie ahead,' reads the blurb on the official site.
'
Using interactive tools like the Portal series to draw them in makes physics, math, logic, spatial reasoning, probability, and problem-solving interesting, cool, and fun which gets us one step closer to our goal—engaged, thoughtful kids!'
Portal will remain free until September 20, 2011. You can
download it here.

Cake!
my mum is finished with angry birds and she wanted me to get another puzzle type game for her. I think I will pop round my parents house tonight and install it.
.... and then I'm off to get my head examined... :)
Wonder if that's a cheesecake?
haha! :D thats such a nice game :P
Of course, any self repecting gamer probably has the orangebox anyway, or bought Portal during the summer Steam sale, when it was about £2 anyway. So they probably won't give away all that many copies, but get good advertising out of it, and might well sell more copies of Portal 2 afterwards.
;)
Unfortunately no, that's no cheesecake. It's a Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte - or Black Forest Gateaux, if you're not being a nerd ;)... Apparently modelled on a cake being displayed in a cake shop near to the developer office. Yes, it is sad that I know that much detail about it. ;)
you'll have a long wait then.
Actually, it wasn't :'(
Cut scene right at the end.
I got the time.
This is the same Steam/Valve everybody with a brain is always complaining about?
I downloaded it. I don't know why. I despised the "First Slice", whenever it first came out. I guess I just want to try it again. At least there isn't a disk and box to take up room in my trashcan.
Not everyone dislikes Steam. Sure, it has its flaws, but its practically the best thing PC gamers have got.
Portal is really quite a funny and clever game. Get to the point at which you can control both portals, and it gets FAR better.
I'd say "Portal is free for a couple of days ...again" would have been a much more apt, if less catchy, headline.
When all is said and done it's still a great game, though...
But at least it's a fun time vampire
Wow. The only cake that's better than cheesecake (IMHO) and it's in the game I downloaded free today!
Pinch me. I'm dreaming!
In all seriousness, I'm really impressed with Portal. Really addictive and simple concept, but I have to say, I'm stuck already. Off to play DNF....
Kill it, kill it with fire!
So you didn't even get to the first puzzle?
Kill the boy!!!
I've just downloaded it and it seems a goodish game ( although every time I get something that even resembles a gun in a game I want to blast the hell out of everything that moves ).
BUT I was wondering the same thing as Kris, do we only have until the 20th to finish it or do we have as long as we want? anyone?

People ( not moderators though as far as I can see ) are saying you only need to add it to your steam library before the 20th. it's yours to own for ever after that.
which makes steam way cooler imo.
Thanks Steam for the freebie, and thanks Bit-Tech for telling me!
