Sony has announced the name and some launch details for its new handheld platform, previously known as the NGP or Next Gen Portable.

From now on, says Sony, the NGP is to be known as the PlayStation Vita.

'Vita means life, and we're confident that PlayStation Vita will be the first product that truly blurs those lines between PlayStation entertainment and your real life,' explained Sony's Kaz Hirai.

Sony has also provided more details on the upcoming device, promising a new social networking feature, called Near, which will let user compare in-game trophies.

The PlayStation Vita will come in two flavours - a WiFi model and a WiFi and 3G model. AT&T has the exclusive carrier contract for the US.

In-game chat will also be possible via a new feature called Party.
