Golden Joystick winners announced

Mass Effect 2 managed to snag both RPG of the Year and Ultimate Game of the Year.

The Golden Joysticks, the longest running games award ceremony in the world, has finished for another year and the Golden Joysticks 2010 trophies were duly handed out on Friday.

The ceremony itself was a lavish event, with US comedian Rich Hall hosting the show and handing out awards to games as diverse as World of Goo and Mass Effect 2.

Check the full list of winners below!

Action Game of the Year: Assassin’s Creed II
Shooter of the Year: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Racing Game of the Year: Forza Motorsport 3
RPG of the Year: Mass Effect 2
Puzzle Game of the Year: World of Goo
Fighting Game of the Year: Super Street Fighter IV
Sports Game of the Year: FIFA 10
Strategy Game of the Year: Plants Vs. Zombies
Music Game of the Year: Guitar Hero 5
Online Game of the Year: League Of Legends
Downloadable Game of the Year: Plants Vs. Zombies
Portable Game of the Year: Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver
Soundtrack of the Year: Final Fantasy XIII
One to Watch: Call Of Duty: Black Ops
UK Developer of the Year: Jagex
Ultimate Game of the Year: Mass Effect 2

There were a few awards which caused our eyebrows to raise an inch or two - Final Fantasy beating Brutal Legend for Soundtrack of the Year? - but we can only blame ourselves. The awards are voted for by the public and the awards pulled in a massive 1.54 million votes this year.

Strategy Game of the Year: Plants Vs. Zombies ?

Must of been a slow year for strategy games, and the year is not even over many of the major releases are in November why are they doing this now?
wuyanxu 1st November 2010, 10:58 Quote
World of Goo and PvZ was released way back in 2009, i don't understand, is this awards for games released in 2010? or games being played by voters in 2010?

oh wait, PvZ is released on xbox in 2010, probably the only good strategy game on the console. let's forget about Starcraft 2, SupCom 2 and Civ 5, they are PC only.

sorry to say this, democracy failed. it's most consolfied list ever.

Voting starts at the start of 2010 and basically ranks last years games.

World of Goo on PC, Forza 3, and Runescape (Jagex).
Showerhead 1st November 2010, 11:42 Quote
What exactly is the qualification for downloadable game of the year? Surely that's pretty much every game released now?

oh right. i see. that makes sense, will expect better strategy games to be voted next year.

i think by downloadable game, it means xbox live arcade games, not retail games on Steam.

Damn glad to see Mass Effect 2 do so well.

I also had the pleasure of playing COD:MW2 recently and I have to agree it's the best FPS, it's one fun game!

Well plants vs zombies is a really good game if you ask me.
Civ 5 is a beautifull game and SCII an ok game (never played multiplayer as I really suck at it).

But as posted before, 2010 was a slow year for strategy...

But believe me, I am a HUGE Fallout Fanboy (FO 1 & 2), And I am really happy to see what obsidian did to new vegas. Still NOT FO but starting to get back to its roots. Hell, even some of the music scores are from FO 2 :D

Anyway, FO: New Vegas or Mass Effect?... Hmmmm I think I would go with New Vegas
Actually I don't see ME2 as a RPG anyways...

I wonder if Bit-Tech will re-review League of Legends like they suggested they would when they reviewed it in its early form. It has changed greatly since then.
sp4nky 1st November 2010, 13:18 Quote
To qualify as a game, they had to be released between May 2009 and May 2010, according to the BBC. Personally I thought World of Goo was earlier than May 2009.
Woodspoon 1st November 2010, 13:18 Quote
Online game of the year: League of Legends ? cant say I've ever played it but I'm kinda surprised it's not WoW or EvE.

Mass effect 2
MW 2

Doh! must have posted at the same time

Kinda surprised they only count "new" new games in this section then.
Considering that it usually takes a while for those sort of online games to get known, get a following, get the bugs sorted out and especially since most receive big updates that often change the game in a big way, like the upcoming one for WoW cataclysm or the many ones for EvE.

Oh well never mind at least they got Plants V Zombies right : )

Number played = 0
Number I might play = 2 (P v Z and World of Goo)

Sorry but that list looks like a countdown of the largest advertising budgets and hype drivers rather than the best games.

Democracy has succeeded if consoles (you know, the platform that outsells PC games by rediculous amounts) are represented far more than PC exclusives. If a PC game sold 1/6th of the amount that a console game did, i wouldnt expect it to be voted more than the console game.
frontline 1st November 2010, 18:37 Quote
Not a complete disaster in terms of taste, but pretty predictable.

Modern Warfare 2 - guess it got in due to the single player campaign, which i gather was ok, not the complete mess that was the multiplayer. Oh well, skipped that one but i have pre-purchased Black Ops, purely because it has dedicated servers (albeit in a limited fashion). The leaked video clips i've seen of the multiplayer game modes look promising, with decent sized maps.

Hopefully sales of Black Ops on the PC will be double those of IW's abomination.

i LOL'd at that, says a lot about the state of FPS games if this trash got the best shooter award. ok maybe i was too harsh with that comment, but i feel its getting worse with each year...

Best shooter should've been awarded to Singularity.
Krayzie_B.o.n.e. 1st November 2010, 20:46 Quote
Call of Duty Modern warfare 2 are you serious? The award should be for the most broken game ever.

This Golden Joystick Award crap is obviously for Console games and what a crap load of games on that list.
I'll take Minecraft over any of this list of junk anyday.

Starcraft 2 is way too good to be on this list so that has to be the reason it isn't on this list.
Sloth 1st November 2010, 21:02 Quote
Something you're all seeming to forget:

"Democracy" and "Best" are mutually exclusive words.

There's a reason why major governments aren't run by direct democracies: the people don't know what the best option is, only the option they're familiar with. You get games like MW2 winning "Best" titles because many players don't know any alternatives. If a single game of a certain genre is the only game you've played from that genre then surely it is the best, no? That logic likely helped Plants Vs. Zombies out quite greatly, the RTS genre is not known to be forgiving to newcomers. PvZ is likely the only strategy game that many of the voters have played, or if they've tried others they likely got ruthlessly defeated online and wrote off the game as being bad.

No award based on votes should have the title of "Best", only "Most Popular".

Wow. Am I the only one here who liked MW2? I haven't bothered with the multiplayer but the single player is just non-stop over the top action!

You might get some people who agree with you if it's just for the singleplayer. Or there are some that hate the singleplayer and only play the multiplayer.

Or there's the ones like my that hate both because the non-stop over the top action completely ruins any chance of a meaningful story by filling it with unreasonable and unnecessary twists, while the multiplayer expands on the worst feature of CoD4: the kill streak bonuses, as well as managing to come up with the single most intrusive HUD ever put into a game. :D

Good to see Mass Effect 2 do well. Best game of the last year IMO. Calling it an RPG is a bit dodgy though.

The list was pretty shabby other than that.
