Duke Nukem Forever confirmed for 2011

Duke Nukem Forever confirmed for 2011

Duke Nukem Forever is now set for a 2011 release date, 2K Games has confirmed.

2K Games has, at the Penny Arcade Expo, confirmed that Duke Nukem Forever will see a 2011 release.

First publicly announced in 1997 (and in development even before then), Duke Nukem Forever has long been a subject of controversy and mockery for computer gamers, who have seen endure many design overhauls and engine changes over the years. After the collapse of 3D Realms, the future looked especially bleak - even despite assurances otherwise.

Now though, publisher 2K Games has confirmed that the project is still alive and that DNF will definitely be released in 2011, with Borderlands and Half-Life: Opposing Force developer Gearbox picking up where 3D Realms left off.

"Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," Gearbox's Randy Pitchford told the Wall Street Journal. "The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn't quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It's the game it was meant to be."

"We're in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill. We need to get past the shock and awe and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan."

Duke Nukem Forever is confirmed to have singleplayer and multiplayer. It's said to be playable in some form or another at PAX, but the only confirmed platform we can find is Xbox 360 at the moment.

Gearbox has also been linked to a spin-off project, Duke Begins.

Reports about the story indicate the Duke will both kick ass and chew bubblegum.

I don't care if it comes with a free hooker and is hand delivered by Jesus after a brisk jog across the Bristol Channel. Did Not Finish had been in development for so many years that my carecup has crumbled to dust through nothing more than old age. Seriously, me and the little grandkid carecups scattered its remains off the end of the pier two years ago.

It would have to be liquid catnip to have any chance of an amazing Lazarus-esque resurrection of my feelings towards the franchise.

I have genuine faith this may happen. Why? Because this isn't 3D Realms any more. It's Gearbox, and it's with a publisher breathing down their throat.

2K Games have no reason to delay, all Gearbox are doing is throwing the pieces together and getting it out of the door.

There's no question on whether it'll come out. The question is whether it'll be any good.

Actually, the Hindenburg was largely successful, operating between 1936 to 1937 and flying transatlantic to North America and Brazil. The accident itself was a combination of arrogance on the part of Pruss, putting the ship into a tighter turn than recommended by Eckener, and adverse weather conditions at the landing site.

An amazingly good book to read if you're into rigid airships would be "The Golden Age of the Great Passenger Airships: Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg" by Harold Dick. Probably the best as he was actually the American representative of the Goodyear-Zeppelin joint venture, and wrote from first hand experience of the ships.

Malvolio 5th September 2010, 05:09 Quote
That honestly looks stunning - and well more than what I think anybody was expecting to see.

Without knowing too much about the story, the only real parallel I can draw between that trailer and other games would be the likes of Half-Life. DNF would seem to be a nice little first person shooter with a problem-solving side, a penchant for exploration, and kick-ass vehicle sections (how can you be human, and not want to drive a monster truck with Duke at the wheel?). So assuming we've got a well-worked story, with some real exposé thrown in, I'd hazard a guess at DNF being a rather solid game.

Then again, it is just a four-minute long trailer, so I could be talking out of my ass, and it may just be the next sixty dollar pile of faeces shoved down our throats by them corporate types.

Oh I do so hope my impressions are right though...

Actual book and no, not a troll post. Name aside, the Graf Zeppelin and the Hindenburg were fantastically successful during a time when most people were flying biplanes into church steeples. The reason that the Hindenburg crashed was largely due to politics in Germany at the time. Eckener and many of the people who operated the airships were vocally against the Nazi party and was effectively sidelined in favour of people more sympathetic to the party.

Hence, Eckener wasn't on the 6th of May flight, leaving Pruss and Lehmann to captain the ship. Eckener knew that the ships had a shallow turn rate (IIR somewhere between 7 and 11 degrees, but I can't be sure) and had on several occasions had arguments with the other captains due to them taking tighter turns than recommended. In airship terms, Pruss and Lehmann, already running late and not wanting to look like tools in front of the worlds' press, tried to make up time on the last docking attempt by taking LZ129 into a four wheel drift over Lakehurst.

WarrenJ 5th September 2010, 19:51 Quote
to be honest it was in relation to the analogy of a balloon being let down. Hence, the "disaster" after the Hindenburg. The hindenburg may have had a great service record. However, it wasn't in relation to that as it was meant. Anyway, back to topic?

I don't know wether or not to be arsed with the new Duke Nukem. It's been fantasised over for god knows how long. Doom 3 was supposed to be epic. But just turned out to be just above average for a FPS. I think expectactions wont be met with this game and for most it will be a let down.
Silver51 5th September 2010, 19:57 Quote
I think that given the history of the game, Bit should consider doing a video supplemental when they review the game. Some in game footage with the guys voicing their personal opinions would be useful when combined with the usual static images et al.

How much longer would the wait have felt like for HL2:Ep3 if not for DNF standing over it, shouting "HA! Screw you and your multiple-year development cycle! I've been around since the early days of the N64, and I'm still not coming out!"?

Steam is neither awful nor online-only ;)

It is online only for certain games. It also is a massive bitch if the offline mode breaks 1 day into being away from the internet and you can't play the any of the 30 or so single player games you legitimately own. In terms of being bloated, my system itself can handle it fine, but get your internet capped to 64k and enjoy the logon failing 9/10 times. It's pretty much unusable for non broadband/capped users, even if they only want single player, and it never used to be.

Steam has done more for PC gaming than anything else in recent memory and its goods definitely outweigh its bads, but it isn't perfect. While for me the increasing prevalence of the internet means that the problems I have with it will soon cease to exist, the fact that others do have problems with it should not be dismissed (although I'll admit they usually present them in a manner that does make you want to tear them apart).

Cue the Duke Nukem Forever logo and a camera pulls back to show that Duke, in first-person, was playing a video game. He's got a gold Xbox 360 controller with the face buttons re-named as D, U, K and E. There's a busty lady in a schoolgirl outfit near the bottom of your first-person view. And there's a second one. One stands up and wipes her mouth.

"What about the game, was it any good?" one of them asks.

"Yeah, but after 12 ****ing years it should be," he answers.

It's only online-only for games that require it regardless of Steam, Assassins Creed 2 etc. Or a multiplayer game, which I assume you're not talking about.

Login failures would indeed be annoying. I admit I was a tad pissed off when I had forgotten to get it to save my password and then our internet went offline for over a week, but that was my own fault.

+1 about the hard to run complaints - it runs fine on my five year old, 1.5Ghz Celeron equipped laptop.

Weird... last night I had a dream Gearbox went under and DNF went back into limbo.

You just cant keep a Duke down! I for 1 am super stoked that Duke is making a re-appearance. My only gripe I have is that the original games (1 + 2) Duke actually had a nemesis (Dr. Proton)

Why is he still batteling the same aliens seen in Duke 3D? I think this could possibly be one of the negatives around DNF. Hopefully though.....Im wrong!
