Valve has finally released a toolset for co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2 which will allow the PC community to make their own custom maps and campaigns.

The add-on also allows users to play custom maps too, including fan maps built for the original Left 4 Dead. Which is nice.

If you just want to play custom maps then you'll need to download and install the sizeable add-on package, while map makers will need the L4D2 Authoring Tools, both of which are detailed over at the official Left 4 Dead blog.

The map building tools seem to be pretty similar to the original Left 4 Dead tools from what we can gather, though with a few extra features for controlling the new capabilities of the AI Director. Some of the more notable additions include a new Gamemode Logic system which automatically adapts maps to suit different gamemodes and the Director Logic add-on which spots expert players and ups the difficulty.

Naturally, the new tools also support the new game modes, enemies and weapons which have been added to Left 4 Dead 2 too.
