Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 3 will not be out before StarCraft 2 and will not see a 2010 release.
Further demolishing the expectations and hopes of
Diablo fans worldwide, Blizzard has stated that
Diablo 3 will not be out before
StarCraft 2.
In fact, according to Blizzard's Rob Pardo,
Diablo 3 definitely won't see a release at all next year - confirming rumours that a 2010 release date for
Diablo 3 is out of the question.
"
We always announce all of our games too early," Pardo said to
TechLand. "
I think it's safe to say that, yeah, [Diablo 3] is not going to be out next year."
Fans had originally hoped that
Diablo 3 would be released before
the spread-out release of StarCraft 2, the first instalment of which has been delayed until 2010.
Pardo goes on to say that the delays aren't due to a lack of resources, but due to Blizzard's deliberate approach to game design that means games are approached iteratively and with completely separate design teams.
"
Now when we announce [a game] we just go; 'Here's the game we're working on, we're going to start talking about it and who knows when it ships,'" added Pardo.
Still, at least we've all got
Torchlight to play in the mean time, right? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
in 2011 we shouldn't be looking at a game where you can count the poly's on someone's face, or cylindrical weapons are looking hexagonal. come on guys this isn't even getting released on consoles, push the bar at least a little!
guess D2 old school across LAN will have to do and torchlight will tie my over until then.
I hear you. Cant wait anymore for D3. And as other sad Torchlight helps to pass the time until then
Its gonna look beautiful.
Ya know what made D2 so popular? Any idiot could run it, even on really old PCs with 1mb of integrated graphics. ;) All my friends played it at one point. In 2011 you'll be able to run this thing with everything on high on most gaming rigs out there, even the shitty 4-5 year old ones.
They're making it for people who wanna play it, not run benchmarks for their GPUs.
Amen to that, brother, amen to that. I worked with StarCraft, Diablo 2 and World of WarCraft. It'll work for Diablo 3.
i just hope blizzard get it right as opposed to release it not ready
Blizzard said very clearly many times in interviews earlier this year "Diablo 3 is not a 2010 game".
If anything there are rumours Diablo will be out even later than expected.
The rumours got spread because a lot of web based shops had it listed with a 2010 release date (something about needing a date in order to list it for pre-orders).
A lot of people take this release date as fact, even though more often than not it's simply just a random date.

P.S. At least Blizzard found a good use for that Xian mythology!
thats fine and dandy but we're living in a different time now, many people dont even know pc gaming exists to any great level and those that do game on a pc generally have a graphics card. i mean WoW has low requirements but you're gonna need a graphics card even if its a 7300GT or whatever. when D2 came out pc gaming was riding high and gamers in general had more knowledge about pc games (imo)
dont get me wrong i played D2 to death, i fully understand what you mean and i remember a time myself when most of my friends were on battle.net. i just think we're talking about a different ball game nowadays
and in terms of gameplay > graphics i also agree. but at the end of the day i've played elite, the graphics were great for the time but i dont wanna go play another space sim with similar graphics in 2011, thats just a fact of the industry, its part of what drives the industry forwards.
I would be curious to see what their development time is in relation to other games studios. It seems like they take twice as long.
Blizzard get a lot of abuse in regards to their long development cycle, but I would be willing to bet 99% of other studios would do the exact same thing if they could.
They take as long as they like because they can, who can really tell Blizzard to 'hurry up'? They effectively bought their last publisher (well, merged..).
If I had to speculate, I would even say their 'announce early, release late' is deliberate to help sales - it turns Blizzard releases into 'events' similar GTA/Halo etc. Fact is, RTS and dungeon crawlers aren't exactly genres which attract massive mainstream sales, but Blizzard's trickle of information (which is naturally followed by press attention) leads to more people who aren't currently fans starting to pay attention.
Anyways Blizzard has almost without fault produced high quality games, feels like their entire franchise is built around that thought. So they can't really "afford" to make a shiet game in that aspect.
Also they don't want to draw consumers from either product, hence Blizzard selling them on entirely different years. Smart move considering the amounts of cash they've put into the development (no I have no idea how much)
we might get Half-Life EP3 by then...
In the meantime, might I suggest some of you trying Titan Quest and its expansion Immortal Throne? Compared to D2 the graphics are simply stunning. The gameplay is just as good and you can actually dual class your characters. I will say that I do not play it online in multiplayer, but its single player game is great. Additionally its been out for a few years now so you should be able to pick up copy fairly cheap.
Please tell me you are NOT asking for a Patch for Diablo 2, please tell me that!
