Golden Joystick winners announced

Fallout 3 was named Ultimate Game of The Year at the Golden Joysticks, with COD4 bagging plenty of awards too.

Fallout 3 was the big winner at this year's Golden Joystick awards, bagging the Ultimate Game of The Year award and pipping Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to the post.

Activision Blizzard wasn't left totally in the cold though, with COD4 bagging a trio of awards and Activision controversially claiming the Publisher of the Year award even in light of the IWNet backlash.

The awards themselves are now in their 27th year, with awards across 15 categories voted for by the public based on nominees chosen by experts. The awards this year went to games from the May 2008 - May 2009 period, explaining why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare claimed awards despite the sequel (which bagged the One to Watch award) being only a week away. The full award list follows.

Family game of the year: LittleBigPlanet
Bliss handheld game of the year: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Retailer of the year: GAME
Mobile game of the year: Metal Gear Solid Touch
Nintendo game of the year: Call of Duty: World at War
MSN multiplayer game of the year: Call Of Duty: World At War
The Rampage soundtrack of the year: Guitar Hero World Tour
Xbox Game of the Year: Gears of War 2
PC game of the year: Fallout 3
Amiqus games UK developer of the year: Jagex
PlayStation game of the year: Killzone 2
Publisher of the year: Activision Blizzard
Online game of the year: Left4Dead
ShortList one to watch: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Ultimate game of the year, together with Zavvi.co.uk: Fallout 3

"The games industry remains innovative and vibrant despite economic pressures," said award organiser Emma Parkinson in a statement. "Many of the winners at the Golden Joystick's demonstrate that UK talent remains crucial to the success of this industry across the globe and must be nurtured at all cost."

Hmmm, i'd have thought Call Of Duty 4 would have walked away with GOTY due to the sheer sales...

Me neither, and the only place I feel like I'm missing out is Left4Dead.

COD 4 modern warfare wasn't eligible as it was released in November 2007. It won the ultimate GOTY at last year's Golden Joysticks.

Jagex is an odd choice for best developer.

Fallout 3 really does not deserve the top spot in my mind, but at the same time I can't really think of any other games from 2008 that were better than it.

MGS was horrible on the iphone os, it only sold due to its name.

go play real racing, fieldrunners or sway. even monkey island with original classic graphics is better than MGS.

Very true, never saw what the big deal with FO3 was it was awful; they must of used about 3 tilesets in the entire game! Really made it a chore to play through.

Am I blind or is COD4 nowhere on that list, World at War is technically COD5 right?

My thoughts exactly. Really, the article should read 'The Call of Duty series won a trio of awards'.

Fallout 3 won best game on PC and overall??? Its was such a dissapointment. I didn't really feel that engaged once I left the vault, it lacked the humour the other games had, and the ending was kinda dissapointing. Was left feeling cheated.

Fallout 3 was a pretty good game.. The first time through.. I didn't see any reason to replay the game. Then it seems like a chore just to see how all the actions change the storyline. It was fun to battle and explore, I'll give them that.

FO3 was a lot better with the DLC added on, the original ending was just a joke if you don't have Broken Steel.
