Sony has responded to rumours indicating that it has been looking to bring downloadable PlayStation 2 games to the PlayStation Network, saying that there are currently no plans whatsoever to bring PlayStation 2 games to the PlayStation 3 in that manner.

Rumours that Sony would be bringing PS2 games to PSN first started when images were leaked which supposedly showed a PlayStation 2 game store with games priced at around £12.99 each.

It turns out though that the images have been faked and Sony has no such plans.

"At this point, we haven't made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3," said Sony's Patrick Seybold in a comment to GamePro.

That the images were faked comes as no real surprise to us, as we try to maintain a healthy level of skepticism, but the idea of Sony not planning on pursuing the idea is fairly interesting, especially after the faff and controversy over the backwards compatibility options on the PlayStation 3.
