Call of Duty 4 may have only just come out, but already Call of Duty 5 is in the pipeline.
Rumours have been circulating for a few days now that
Call of Duty 5 is in development at Treyarch and that it'll returning to a World War II setting. Those rumours, while still officially unconfirmed, are looking to be more and more certain by the moment.
The boys over at
Kotaku have kept their ears close to the ground on this one and have been rewarded for their vigilance by the words of an anonymous inside source.
The tipster has confirmed that
Call of Duty 5 is definitely in development at Treyarch. The game has doubtlessly been planned for a while and is listed in a series of
Vivendis corporate documents, alongside
Guitar Hero IV and new
James Bond and
Tony Hawk games. What hasn't been confirmed though is what setting
Call of Duty 5 will feature and who will be developing it.
The Kotaku insider however has revealed that the game will eschew the modern setting of
Call of Duty 4 to return to the original World War II setting. The insider has also said that the game will be set in Pacific theatre of war - a much under-used locale for shooters.
Personally, we find the whole return to WWII thing a little bit disappointing.
Call of Duty 4 has only been out a little while and bowled us over with awesomeness, so taking a step back like this is a bit of a letdown.
Maybe it's just us though - what do you think? Could another WWII game be good for the franchise, or is it just another nail in the coffin? Let us know what you think in
the forums.
Now there is going to be further confusion when CoD5 arrives done by Treyarch again (they did some addon scenario to CoD1, then CoD3 for consoles).
I'm so tired of the WW2 genre and I'm so pleased with what infinityward did with COD4, it's time to expand on that and move forward.
If they do have to take a step back in time why can they do Vietnam or something....please please please no more WW2!!!
This is sad news :(
All I want is a multiplayer that is as fun as Bf2 is/was, set in a modern context and with the level of environment interaction of Crysis.
Or have I just described BF:Bad Company?
You probably described bf3
could be a good fill in until I. ward gets cod6 to market. no more of these console only games!
sure does look like it. you guys realize that cod4 is actually the real cod3. also, i wont be buying this 'fake cod5', ill wait for the real cod4 to come out (or cod6 as it will most likely be called). cod 3 and cod 5 are not apart of the call of duty franchise but rather spin offs made by another company.
it would be intersting to have a cod set in vietnam. or even if a cod had its own cold war story. i think its bull that other companies get to use the call of duty name to sell their games.
its not cod. its made by a different company
ooh you mean the people that did CoD3 and paid for the name are doing CoD5, oh damn, okay nevermind then >_<
I should have paid more attention to the article ~_~
Proper COD style multiplayer in a Crysis quality jungle would be pant browning stuff.
If COD5 was to go back to a WWII setting, I would be horribly dissapointed. I enjoy the more modern combat of COD4, and the story was actually good, went along with today's world.
Infinity Ward would definatley have to be in control of this game, especially considering how awesome they made COD4, my favorite game of all time.
In an authentic CoD Vitenam game you would never see the enemy. You would walk around all day in the hot sun, losing troops to booby traps and snipers. It would be a game where the bad guys look exactly like the civillians and they all kill you. It would be a game where little kids run up to you and drop live grenades in youre jeep, where you fight all night long, and in the morning there isn't a single enemy body on the battlefield. This is the kind of war vietnam was.
so CoD is folowing the Star Trek tradition then :D
I think the pacific theatre is overlooked too often by game developers. Everyone wants an Omaha Beach sniperfest, and most WWII games have a D-Day mission as a result. It's a good and easy to 'write' for period of the war, and while historically important, I've played it so many times it's just boring now. Can't we just look at another part of the war? Pacific would be good. Italy would be good too, the invasion from Africa, though not really enough in itself to make a full game out of. Could always do both. The pacific would get a bit predictable after a while.
The modern thing I'm not so keen on, COD4 (SP) carried it off rather well but the story still had bits that were just so arcady. Running around in Pripyat, yes that's a good idea . There's only so many eastern terrorist organisations that you can single handedly destroy before it gets a bit Omaha Beachy, IMO.
vietnam vietnam vietnam vietnam vietnam vietnam vietnam

It would have to be on an island, but keep in mind that the battle of Gaudelcanal went on for months and months, as did the second battle of the Phillipines. You could do a certain number of beach landing battles combined with some mountain and jungle maps, and maybe throw in some PT boat areas for variety. Not sure if the game would lend itself to large scale naval battles.
