Sony to talk 'Game 3.0' at GDC

Sony's Phil Harrison will focus his keynote on what the company has coined Game 3.0. Could this be PlayStation Home?

In typical Sony fashion, the company has pre-announced details of its presence at this year's Game Developers Conference.

Phil Harrison, president of Worldwide Studios at Sony, will deliver the opening keynote entitled "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames."

In his speech, Harrison will focus on the four major components that make up the company's Game 3.0 initiative. These are community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce.

The specifics of these features have not been announced yet, but Sony says there will be a live demonstration of the technology in Harrison's keynote. It's claimed that the demonstration will use previously unannounced services and games for PS3.

"This is a very exciting time to be part of the game development community. Advancements in technology combined with new consumer trends mean the industry has a great opportunity to create engaging new entertainment experiences for the world," said Harrison.

Last week Kotaku uncovered rumours of Sony's plans to introduce a service known as PlayStation Home. It's quite possible that the major components of Game 3.0 will be known collectively as PlayStation Home and will incorporate features similar to what we've already become accustomed to on Xbox Live. In addition, PlayStation Home is rumoured to have a MySpace-like social networking feature - this could be the community component of what Sony has coined Game 3.0 for the time being.
