Rockstar has announced that the next version of Grand Theft Auto will be released simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PS3.

We have no name, and fewer pictures, but we do have a release date - October 16 in the US, and October 19 everywhere else. That's 2007, folks.

Rockstar will also be providing episodic content for the series via Xbox Live.

The announcement marks a massive coup for Microsoft in the console wars. GTA alone is enough to sell consoles, the previous generation has proved. By having it on the 360, and with additional downloadable content over the PS3, Microsoft has removed a major reason that many will have had for waiting for the PS3.

Previous GTA titles have been ported to the Xbox months (or years) after the PS2 versions.

The news rather explains why GTA4 was missing from Sony's PS3 lineup yesterday - we might imagine that they're none too impressed.

Wow. Who saw that coming? Debate what you think the next-gen GTA might end up looking like in the forums.
