Microsoft sells only 244 copies of Vista in China

Microsoft shifted only 244 copies of Vista in the first two weeks of Chinese sales thanks to rampant software piracy.

The Chief Distributor for Windows Vista in Beijing has recently let slip some rather embarrassing figures regarding Microsoft's success (or lack thereof) in the Chinese market.

Apparently, in the initial two week launch period for Windows Vista (spanning January 19th to February 2nd) Microsoft managed to shift only 244 copies of its spangly new OS.

The recently leaked figures throw Microsoft's massive advertising campaign in China into the realm of ridicule. The campaign was designed to try and undermine the thriving software piracy business and included a massive advert on the side of one of the tallest buildings in Asia, the 421 meter high Jin Mao tower in Shanghai.

Software piracy is rampant in most of Asia, especially China where pirated versions of Windows Vista sell on the streets for just $1. Amazingly, as of 2005 over 90% of all software in China is pirated, according to the Business Software Alliance.

This news comes just days after US Trade Representatives announced they will be filing complaints with the World Trade Organisation over what has been described as "inadequate protection of intellectual-property rights."
