2.40 PS3 update withdrawn, may brick PS3s

Sony has pulled the 2.40 firmware update for the PS3 after reports that it has bricked consoles.

Sony hasn't had it good over the last twenty-four hours and the console making giant has had to withdraw the new 2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3 after claims that the update is bricking many consoles.

The update was one of the most anticipated firmwares too, adding in an in-game XMB, as well as trophy support for some games, and though these both sound like good things many PS3 gamers have been disappointed by the lack of retro-support for the trophy system. If you want to unlock any of the achievements in the game then you need to play the game all over again.

Meanwhile, not all developers are signing up to the trophy system as eagerly as others and Insomniac, the developer of Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet and Clank, has confirmed that it has no current plans to add trophy support to either games.

Not that it matters hugely - Sony has been forced to withdraw the update for the time being anyway as many PS3 owners are claiming that the update has rendered their console little more than a paperweight for some reason.

Sony is currently looking into the problem and is hoping to find out the cause soon, but in the mean time the update is unavailable to all those who haven't downloaded it.

As if that weren't enough, it seems that some wily hacker found a way in to Sony's US website overnight and replaced the God of War and Singstar game pages with some anti-virus scareware scams. These have since been corrected.

All in all, not a very good day for Sony.
