MS: No plans for Blu-ray on Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive: now useful as a paperweight only.

Microsoft has officially put the HD DVD drive add-on to bed, permanently. So a Blu-ray drive replacement seems entirely logical, right? Sure, Microsoft may be a bit bashful about having backed the wrong horse, but it's only a matter of time, right?

Wrong.

According to a statement released by Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg, the group product manager for the Xbox 360, Microsoft has no plans whatsoever to develop a Blu-ray drive add-on for the Xbox 360. In fact, Microsoft isn't currently thinking to add any new high-definition players to the console.

"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience...We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," Greenburg said. Apparently Microsoft thinks that's enough then.

Greenberg then went on to explain that the reason the PlayStation 3 had outsold the Xbox 360 in the US last month was because of supply problems. He added that come April though, they'll be in a much stronger position - just in time for GTA 4.

Still mourning the death of HD DVD? Gutted that there's no Blu-ray drive on the way to your console of choice? Let us know in the forums.
