Microsoft sued by porn company

Microsoft sued by porn company

I hope this image isn't from Perfect 10 or we might get sued as well!

Remember last year when Google was sued last year by Perfect 10 over their pictures showing up in search results? Well, the porn producer is at it again - but this time it's after Microsoft.

Perfect 10's lawsuit alleges that Microsoft's MSN search engine illegally reproduces the company's content by creating thumbnails for its image search and includes links to free, full-size versions of the images. Microsoft is also being blamed for reproducing passwords that have been posted on other websites in its search results.

Norm Zada, president of Perfect 10, has said "Our business is being destroyed. This is a life and death battle for us."

According to Zada, the company has lost £1.97 million a month due Microsoft's, Google's, and Amazon.com's search engines. The company now operates on the internet alone since the recent closing of the magazine.

So far, Perfect 10 has sued between 10 and 25 web sites that were posting its content without permission, but many of the sites are located in foreign countries.

Google originally lost the suit filed by Perfect 10 but the decision was later overturned by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Perfect 10 is set to appeals the court's decision but there is no court date currently scheduled.

Who are you cheering for to win this case, Perfect 10 or Microsoft? Let us know what you think about all of these copyright lawsuits over in the forums or in the comments below.

Wait, amazon has a search engine? :P

Seems like Perfect 10 is dying and wants to grab money.

Err..can't they just stop this with a robots.txt file?

Lets see how many visitors they get if all search engines remove them from the search results.

Talk about bitting the hand that feeds you!

Perfect 10 is really fighting for life but I think Microsoft will win

You know it *might* be the fact they are suing everyone and their grandmother they are losing millions. That aside, how can a few images cause that kind of loss...

I was thinking the same thing... If you want visitors to visit a page you want it to turn up in a search engine. They won't get many hits if visitors have to guess their address...

I can see google bringing that up. I'm sure they'll say something along the lines of "we never asked to be included in your search"

Sillyness.

I'm on Perfect 10's side. We should pay for nudity even though we spend billions a year just covering up.

They could also just insert a webserver directive to block referrals from google and microsoft linked to image content. Lots of sites do that, it's a very simply fix.

I don't really see how it's destroying their business, I don't know about you guys, but if I want a pic of some boobies, I want high res boobies, not some tiny thumbnail.

I think the reason their business is falling is because no-one likes to pay for their porn on the net when they can get it free of charge on other sites.

They are suing Microsoft because it links to other websites that use perfect 10s images without consent, it doesnt host any full sized images itself (or as far as im aware); And because MS indexes sites that contain passwords brute forced from the perfect10 site itself they are also blaiming them for it :|

Even I can see this is futile, they must need the $ :(

Can imagine how useless search engines would be if everyone had to ask to be included?

;) most valid explanation yet. They should be suing those other sites but MS is such a nice big juicy - stationary - target. However: http://news.yahoo.com/comics/uclickcomics/20070808/cx_crrub_uc/crrub20070808;_ylt=Amlv27UzP.AbcdFnHoSl4ovtcLQF <- it'll be nice and big but you don't want to be too close when that one drops.

You do actually have to submit your website to search engines in order for them to search through your site. As far as I remember I had to do it for both msn and google, so someone submitted and they wont beat Microsfot, them fellows got best lawyers about.
naokaji 10th August 2007, 08:06 Quote
correct me if i'm wrong... but cant you put some code in the header of your website to tell the searchengines how to "behave" on your site?

No you don't, that just helps them pick it up a little earlier.

There are lots of things you have to opt out of, if their too damn lazy to write 1 line into a text file, they deserve it

In the UK you have to check a box to be left off the "Electoral Register" (is that the right word ?)(the thing that has the names and addresses of everyone who hasn't opted out)
Whats the difference ?
Oclocker 11th August 2007, 14:22 Quote
Well as perfect 10 have always had flat chested models who cares?
Pygo 11th August 2007, 19:58 Quote
I've never even heard of Perfect 10.

Probably a publicity stunt, considering that they are repeating it. (Assuming they really did sue google last year.)

I usually detest a lot of things Microsoft, but in this case I'm well on their side.
