Starcraft 2. Need we say anything else?

Starcraft 2. Need we say anything else?

You've been waiting for years, suffered numerous rumours and disappointments, but finally the wait is over - finally StarCraft 2 has landed.

Or, soon anyway.

In case you missed it, Blizzard announced the game just a few days ago at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, held in Seoul, Korea, after rumours reached a boiling point.

It's been almost a decade since the original StarCraft was unleashed on the market, racking up critical acclaim and cult status immediately, and finally the sequel is here. Fans of the game will be pleased to know that the game will be re-appearing not as an MMO as was rumoured and feared by some. Instead, the game will be true to its roots and be a real-time strategy game with a story-driven campaign mode and multiplayer support.

The official StarCraft 2 website is hosting a whole load of media, including screenshots and trailers at the moment. Details are slowly leaking out, but what we know for sure at the moment is that the game will incorporate a number of new units and features and will ship with all the map-editing and script making tools required for mod makers.

Blizzard has also promised the game will feature the same fast-paced, hard-hitting gameplay that made the original such a runaway hit in the eyes of gamers worldwide.

So, as the war between the Protoss, Terran and Zerg races continues it only really remains to be seen if the king of real-time strategy can reclaim its crown successfully.

What do you think; will StarCraft 2 be as good as the original, or will it simply be a pile of radiation-proof pants? Let us know what you think in the forums.

It's about time! :D

The development looks quite far along and playable, I wonder when it will be released.

Yeah saw this, very excited about it.
I watched some of the gameplay videos (mainly aimed at showing off new Protoss units) and it looks pretty cool in motion. Protoss look more Advanced alien, Zerg looks more organic and Terran look like the dirty humans they are :P

Excellent!!! Starcraft is still one of my most played games. Can't wait to get my grubby mitts on the next version. It doesn't look like it'll play on the throwaway hardware that will run Starcraft original though.

God I really miss Starcraft.

I always thought that it was much better than C&C.

Whoa, I think hell just froze over!

Very nice, I have such fond memories playing Starcraft with my friends at the local LAN back in the day. I cant believe it has been a decade since the first. That intro movie is amazing, good to see the Terrans haven't changed much, or Blizzards star quality.

I understand why it took so long, I cant imagine trying to top your best creation, especially one that has become NFL of South Korea. They have some mighty big shoes to fill.

I replayed through the original last year and realized how old it was then.

I'd think Ctrl+Alt+Delete (www.cadcomic.com) hit the nail on the head with this one.
Quote DXR_13KE 21st May 2007, 21:36

The cinematic trailer is just sooooo cool and good-looking...download it, don't view the flash version. Hell, it's only 65MB ! (P2P blizzard downloader).

Can't wait.
Must upgrade PC, for it...

OMG, can't wait. Starcraft is my favourite game. Played it through for the ~time a couple months ago. The screenshots are awesome. I also like how they have kept the same Isometric style levels.

If anyone understands korean, what does the reflection on the terrans helmet say in the announcement video? You can hear loads of koreans go a bit crazy when they see it.

But like I said, from the ingame videos I've seen it looks nearly there already, and with all the resources blizzard have to throw at a game these days... maybe Christmas? (Or is that stupidly optimistic? :D)

I gotta admit, I am very excited about this, but I sure hope the existing screenshots are not the final product. They are way to comic like, makes it look like the artist is from Super Mario.

Come on Blizzard, you can do better than 1980s comic book artwork.
Quote Solidus 22nd May 2007, 21:29
well its announced...expect it to be released christmas 2020 knowing blizzard.
Quote Paolo 22nd May 2007, 21:42
Hmm, it seems to be very much a case of "aint broke, don't fix" from the initial screenshots and other tidbits released to the web.

Of course, these are just the very first resources so I can't base an assumption on that, but it seems like they know their fanbase well and the game will probably be geared towards them rather than building a game which seeks to form it's own fanbase around an entirely new take on the universe.
