R650 to arrive in Q3 of this year -- just one quarter after R600 launches?

AMD's replacement for the yet-to-be-launched R600 graphics processing unit looks set to arrive just one quarter after AMD releases its new flagship GPU, if a report on Fudzilla turns out to be true.

The site claims that the new GPU is codenamed R650, and it is based on 65 nanometre process technology.

R650 will apparently be branded as the Radeon HD 2950 XTX and will feature 1024MB of GDDR4 memory. The report also states that the cards are expected to launch as early as August or September -- the latter part of Q3.

This is a similar situation to what happened with the Radeon X1800-series, which were replaced only four months later by the Radeon X1900-series of graphics processing units.

If this does turn out to be the case, we have to wonder what Nvidia will have up its sleeve, as that is almost one year after it originally launched its GeForce 8800 family of GPUs.
