Could Dell's E228WFP be the budget widescreen monitor of choice this year?
bit-tech forum member r4tch3t writes to tell us about a new budget 22" widescreen monitor that has appeared on Dell's New Zealand website.
The E228WFP looks set to take on recent splash of 22" widescreen monitor releases from some of the big brands in the TFT industry with a price of NZ$749 - that's a shade over £310 including VAT here, and around $500 in the US. The US price is probably quite a bit higher than expected, it's more likely to retail for around $400.
Update:
The monitor has been found for CA$329 on Dell's Canadian website. See
here for more details.
Looking at it, the E228WFP's on-paper specifications aren't too bad, especially when you consider that the monitor is aimed at the lower end of the market. They read as follows:
- Viewable Size: 22 inches (wide);
- Pixel Pitch: 0.282mm;
- Response Time: 5ms (typical);
- Viewing Angle: 160 degrees (verticle), 160 degrees (horizontal);
- Luminance (brightness): 300cd/m²;
- Contrast Ratio: 800:1;
- Native Resolution: 1680x1050;
- Connectivity: D-Sub (analogue), DVI-D (digital) with HDCP support.
On top of this respectable set of features, the monitor also comes with tilt functionality. Although that's not quite in the same league as the Samsung 215TW or Dell 2407WFP/2007WFP monitors that come with tilt, height adjustment, swivel and pivot capabilities, it's similar to what other monitors in this price range would come with.
The low response time probably means that the screen uses a 6-bit LCD panel, as opposed to the preferred 8-bit panels found in the better screens. With that said though, it should be good enough for most gamers and students looking for a decent-sized monitor that doesn't break the bank.
It's not clear when Dell plans to announce this monitor, but it may happen this week during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, since it's an event that Dell has used to announce many of its products in the past. We'll be sure to keep an eye out for this monitor on the show floor.
You read more about the monitor on
Dell's New Zealand website. We've attached a few pictures in case the monitor is removed from Dell's site.
Yeah, but don't forget the R.O.B. factor which will add another £100 on top like it did to the 20" 'budget' screen over here
It's over double the price of my nice 19" Widescreen I bought before Xmas.
And only a little better in the performance, not really enough for "Human Eyes" to notice.
could make a good upgrade to my 12" CRT!
There isn't much difference between panels today anyway, since only a few manufacturers make LCDs, the backlight and electronics (connections, HDMI, etc) are what make monitors stand above others.
Now that is just silly cheap! Would be rude not to at that price. I paid £300 got a 22" not long ago, ah the wonders of living in the UK
Also, how is the scaling? I'm interested in making the jump to 22", but my GPU won't be able to handle that high res. I just got a 19" vx922 in the summer for the same price *wince*. Might be worth it getting an additional monitor. ;)
Aggies
I was finally able to go off and order a 215TW today and paid £349 + £7 shipping, could have gotten another £5 off probably but went for a reputable dealer instead (Komplett, where I got my last samsung from also - they seem to stock models most dont) anyhow even at £310 it would be starting to get close.
I just picked up my Benq FP202W (20", 1,680×1,050) for about C$300 today! I had no idea about this deal! :(
It is definitely a budget monitor: The horizontal viewing angle is fine but vertically the changes in brightness are quite noticeable. Speaking of brightness the back lighting is a little uneven (with the bottom seeming brighter and a little washed out). However, once I got into a game I was surprised at it being more immersive than playing on my 19" widescreen was.
It's not the greatest 22" monitor but it is a decent one at a good price (especially on sale). The only downside is that my 7600GT is not quite up to the task with all the visual extras turned on.
@ Aankhen: Dell has a link on their page somewhere so you can sign up to get
spamnotice of sales & "deal days". They often have monitors on sale so it's worth waiting for next time. Any chance of returning the one you got? If not, well, yours has the same resolution as this one anyway.They seem really nice. I might actually pick one up instead of a much needed graphics card >.<
thought this might interest some of you...
