Not us recording the podcast. Possibly better looking.
So, what with the 'new media' revolution and 'web 2.0' taking over the world, we decided here at
bit-tech HQ that it was about time we started a podcast.
We've been playing around with formats and some ideas, and we look forward to starting a regular weekly release schedule straight in the new year (although possibly once we've recovered from the debauchery of CES).
In anticipation of this, we've bought a whole bunch of audio equipment - a nice mixing desk with firewire and some mics, and have slapped the rest of the office into being quiet once a week so we can actually get some recording done.
Well, when we sat down to discuss our nominations and winners of the
bit-tech 2006 awards this week, we realised that we could take the opportunity to do a trial recording and see how things came out.
So, if you've ever wondered what it sounds like when me, Tim and Ryan sit down and argue about the best stuff we've seen this year, you can Right-Click-Save-As this file and check it out in your MP3 playback device of choice.
bit-tech Podcast Alpha 0.1a OMGZ
It's an hour long, so dig in.
Let us know what you think
over in this forum thread, and look out for our Awards Article next week.
got nothing better to do....
Could do with an introduction theme tune me thinks... :D
EDIT:
Is it me, or does Tim sound like that bloke from the Office?
Edit: Flop of the year, I agree
I look forward to listening to this Gem.
Listening now. 34 minutes in.
Well now it is 2:26am here.
Good job, looking forward to more.
2:26 am? Where the hell are you, Midway? Alaska? :?
in fact im 15 ;)
It's clearly fun to play though with a good story and I cannot wait for more of the same if they develop episodic content or GoW 2.
In all fairness though if I were to rate it I would probably give it an 8.5
In all fairness as interesting as the podcast is/was I can't help but feel it was way too long. After the bit about games I started skipping until I heard something vaguely interesting.
Obviously though if it continues as a regular Bit feature I'm sure it will gain more structure and become more to the point ;)
::edit::
Its Low-co Row-co not lock-o rock-o surely?
Next it will be a myspace page, and then who knows ;)
j/k im pulling a nice 300k in the uk here should have it in a min.
Love the idea, guys, it only gets better and better :D
Gonna listen to it now.
Now maybe it's just me, but the coincidence is astonishing. :/
I agree about the ending, but hell I love listening to this stuff. Everyone around me gets sick and tired about my tech "mumbo jumbo" so at least I can listen to some guys like myself ramble on about whatever.
Get an intro tune, and get that **** uploaded on a weekly basis.
The weekly one is coming - shorter, proper music + intro, etc etc. It's pretty swell
other than that agreed.
One of the only podcasts I've listened to that I actually laughed out loud at.
listening now and it sounds alright, have to turn the sub down all the way or all the sound comes out there. You have to get an awesome theme song now and then I think your good.
CS:S came out 2 years ago, and is a remake of a 7 year old game. Hardly a candidate for the 2006 awards.
some bits had me laughing some bits were ok. Overall i dont listen to them this is the first and i did it because you are good with whats upto date ect but i did feel a bit left down with how it was overall structured,
now i know its the first one but i felt could of had a tiny bit more direction (dont hate me) and as its the first one i can forgive you for that and shall listen to the next one but i would like to see some type of reviews of specific products on there as i feel its easier to explain all the tech jargon in words than it is to read it, so maybe a few pieces on the type of technology out, and can definatlly see you doing interviews on it so would be looking forward to some future gaming develpment interviews such as perhaps crysis.
Any way rant over all very well and good for the first one but a few things to impove on :) hope my critism helps.
Inferno
Nice 1st effort on the podcast. Content was fabulous. Listened in the car while traveling 7+ hours (each way) for the holiday. Incidentally, after a long trip like that...I'm all caught up on my podcasts for the 1st time all year!
Again, loved the content, crave more of it, but my 'hints' are all technical in nature:
Content gets an A+, Audio Engineering gets a D-
Some helpful hints though: (tried to rank in order of importance)
1) You guys really need to control the audio levels....and NO...don't try to do this manually. Simply set up some compression/limiting (and tweek the settings right) and things will dramatically improve. While this is a basic 'audio 101' kind of thing, if you don't know what I'm talking about maybe you can ask Leo (yes, TWiT Leo) about it Wil? He has really good compressor/limiter settings on all the TWiT podcasts, and his levels are always strong, clean and generally superb. Surely you guys have access to an audio-savvy person who could help you out with this? I'd offer to help in a more 'hands on' way but I'm in the States. The bottom line is you've got to 'rein in' those audio levels...limit those huge peaks, compress those lows. You want a relatively small dynamic range for a spoken-word podcast. My wife and I were going nuts riding the volume control up to hear what one person was saying and then someone else would burst in and practically blow our ears off and we'd have to crank it down quickly. Mic-level management is step one, step two is the absolute necessity of compressor/limiter.
2) Microphone placement/working the mics. I don't know what you all used for microphones but a little basic instruction to all contributors about how to 'work' the microphone would help a lot. Distance from microphone, pop screening, and just general human control of voice levels and tone will hopefully come with experience and attention to it. One big tip is that if everyone is on headphones as you record it will automatically bring them a greater sense of awareness to how they are sounding on mic, and they can 'work' the mic themselves to best advantage.
3) If you can afford to, invest in better microphones and rigging for them. You dont' have to go crazy expensive with it to reach a very nice threshold of quality. Again, points 1 and 2 can actually make more difference than better mics, but once you have them covered---you get the idea.
Anyway, mad props on a great podcast, will definitely subscribe and if you haven't already make sure you set up RSS via iTunes.
All the best!
it did sound like David Brent was there lol
