AMD's acquisition of ATI finally went through this morning, with today marking the first time that ATI's team of workers turn up to work with @amd.com email addresses.

The company used the occasion to tell assembled journalists in London about its new 'Fusion' initiative, which will see multiple GPU cores integrated into the CPU. Whilst AMD said that discrete graphics, based on PCI-E, weren't going to go away, the low-end and mid-range would be dominated by CPU-integrated graphics, speakers predicted.

The Chief Technology Officers of both AMD and ATI gave their support for the project, which they likened to the integration of floating point processors in the 486. They planned to create an extension to the x86 instruction set, much like AMD 64 instructions, that would be open to the industry and maintain backwards compatibility.

We will have full details on AMD's Fusion plan tomorrow, so stay tuned. In the meantime, discuss the two companies over in the forums.
