An overclocked i7 on water at 4Ghz reaches a water delta of about 35C at the very best. At load the water is going to be about 10C above ambient temperature after a few minutes and the ambient temperature in a house under a desk is going to be 25C.

25 + 10 + 35 = 70C which is what the grand majority of watercoolers are seeing on their i7.

Even with an uber extreme cooling setup you won't see any lower than 60C. The i7 is not a Core 2 Quad, they are much hotter.

70C for i7 is perfectly normal. Anyway, that's after a 12 hour+ Prime (small FFTs) run, usually it runs at ~65C full load.

In addition, as I have said before, I never set out to build the fastest/greatest rig. However, 4.20Ghz is nothing to be sniffed at IMHO.

I'm just happy most folk seem to like it, and that watercooling got some decent press.

All the best.

Hold on. How much did he actually do himself?

WCUK did all the cutting, and painting. Fast Signs did the Vinyls.

So apart from changing a couple of leds, wiring and some polishing, it's all done for him?

That's not really modding is it?

Or am I completely missing the point / misreading it?

his concept either way.. it wouldn't exist without him whipping the water cooling guy- but blowing up two gtx 280's made me lol

it could be stock who cares- all about his case mod.. I always wanted to make a case mod (like a big peen that looks like it's swinging)- just never motivated enough to do it.. gotta give him props it's a nice looking case

You pay people to do all the hard work, then fiddle a bit yourself, and voila. Anybody can do that. No offence of course.

??? Myself and a friend did the artwork, Fast Sign printed it and profile cut the vinyl... what do you expect? In addition, how many people do you know that do their own powder coating? The components for this build came from all over the world (not through UK distributors) - HDD backplane, Bitspower fittings, Primochill PRO-LRT hosing etc. I literally spent hundreds of hours working on this build and tweaking things. Yes WCUK helped me out (thanks Rob & Marcus BTW), however, most of the work was indeed done by yours truly.

nice work, now if Darken can finish his Orange System build too that would be awesome :)

Oh I love the plumbing you did for the GPUs, great idea.

I did my best, most people like it and I like it... so that's all that really matters at the end of the day. :-)

fair enough, and hey its a forum, where people right what they think, and there is always one pr$ck who wants to be a hater and today that was me, but i wasnt the first as i read back through the comments.

and dont get me wrong, its not the case i dislike particularly, its my understanding that there is a lack of modding by you within the case, check out some of the mods in the bt community and see what scratch builds are that offer real inspiration and creativity. That wasnt a personal attack as i dont have the creativity and l333t skillz to pull off some of the things that these modders do, maybe this is more for the attention of the editorial team for posting this 'mod' as a featured article. anyways, enough of me bla bla blaaaaaaaing, the finished product does look nice. enjoy the 5 mins of fame in the g33k world and the temporary epeen extension!

maybe i', just envious of not being able to do this kind of thing, but then who gives a f%%k.

Hi fatman. I do see your point but at the end of the day it's ideas just as much as being able to execute them that count and I'd like to think we have enough scope here to cover crazy, top to bottom, custom part fabricated mods, and mods that take on a theme and do it well.

After all, while he did get others to do some of the work, not everyone has the meansto do everything themselves and all the ideas were his own. If we didn't feature any mod that had help from a third party, I think the list of things to feature would be pretty thin. It's all about being unique and if printed vinyl, powder coating, colour-coordinating and not to mention being featured on the BBC aren't unique enough then I don't know what is!

Well, if i wanted to nitpick, i'd say that building something from scratch can't really be called a modification.

Maybe it's just me but i find mods to be a lot more interresting than scratch builds. Anyone can design their own case. But taking something that already exists, and making it better/unique/personal seems to be just as big of a task overall.

I agree with many of the others... The computer looks incredible, but I am not really all that impressed...

The only mods that I noticed that were actually done by the builder is the cut for the radiator in the top of the case, the polishing of the full cover water block, changing of the LED color on the fan controller, dismantling the case (only to send it off to be powder coated by someone else), braiding the power supply cables, and putting stickers on the case. Really nothing spectacular in my book...

I am not saying that I could do better and I am very happy for David to have such a nice computer. I just believe that great mods are ones that involve large amounts of time, effort, and skill, not just having large amounts of money to throw at parts and services. Sadly to say, in my eyes, this mod is not one that falls into that category.

I feel bad saying this, but I felt that I needed to voice my opinion. As mrb_no1 said, it is most likely jealousy that is speaking through this post, so disregard it if you don't agree with me.

For those of you hating, we could go back to publishing less mods from the community, but I thought you wanted more? At least, that has been the vibe through the community in the past 6 months or so.

We're making a concious effort to publish more modding articles and dedicating more space to it in the magazine as well. The idea is to offer more support to the community through the contacts both bit-tech and Custom PC have - which is what the community has requested. Readers Drives, for example, is pretty well sponsored and in order to qualify for that now, you have to have posted your worklog on the bit-tech forums. In addition to that, we're working to improve Mod of the Month as well in that regard which, as you know, requires your worklog to be on these ere pages.

It's as if I can't win. :(

Its good to see cpc articles making their way over to bit-tech towers, but there is a lot more ordering and a lot less modding than we are used to seeing in these sorts of articles.

That the man in question put a lot of effort into the build is without dispute (and I might add, finished with a fantastic machine that anyone would be proud to own) However Im sure you can spot the differences between the modding done in this article and those published at bit-tech previously.

You must be joking right....please. The list of amazing modders here is almost endless, sure that's a nice case but nothing in comparision to GT69 or Green Sabbath for example.

I for one found it stunning visually. Not the most complex mod as has been mentioned by many, but does that really matter? It's neat and tidy, visually distinct, a lovely nod at a great book and film.

I love it and applaud the creator and all those who helped.

To much money maybe, does he even play games on it or is it just wasting away as a show system.
Overkill I think.

Good luck to him, that's not too far off from the more premium system builders, right? I mean, you don't quite get the amazing service they offer, and you get to pay a bit more..
