The name for my case is derived from Reptiles-Amphibians and of course the PI itself. Hence “REPTO-AM-PI-BICUS” The PI, like any other board is sterile enough so I wanted to make it organic in this one. I wanted to show as many elements of this theme as possible and also give it that menacing touch of the fascinating world of the cold blooders.
The main problem I faced here was the size. The PI is tiny and at least I could use the 15x15x15 restrictions of the contest to make it just a wee bit bigger. Even though its sterile electronics, I wanted to give a somewhat organic touch to it, scales, repto feet and fangs-n-teeth etc. The whole case is built of different types and thicknesses of plys, which can be carved and sanded.
The case itself covers the PI, showing the connectors, and then I set it all off with an artificially distanced base to give it more body underneath. The whole case is 100% hand made in hours and hours of work. All the teeth of the case, croc-feet, the scales and so forth all carved and dremeled and screwed on in the right place. The case can be screwed open to modify or repair and the sd card even has a repto-tooth cover too and is finished in the same overall style with stainless steel chains.
To get that organic intense look I used regular printer ink in my airbrush instead of normal stains or paint. It does not sink in too much and can be mixed to get practically any color required just like a printer does too. I wanted that dirty swampy, greeny brownish and amber colors with black shades and yellow creamy dirty looking teeth.
To get the teeth right I just had to sand off enough till the tips were cream ply color again. I gave some of the tips that prey ripping red touch too. To toughen up the surface I glazed it all with clear semi glossy varnish. To set the whole REPTO-AM-PI-BICUS off I made it into a little set by making the PI-PEN its holder as a reptile eye THE EYE OF THE PI, and the, crocodile Dundee type of USB tooth-fang length-adjustable locket necklace.
The SD card runs raspbian and works fine. I will eventually be making a keyboard for it too which will also be posted here. A whole monitor would also be a great extra, who knows what is yet to come, seeing as I like this style very much.
