Ok here is the stuff I needed for the mod:
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/1958/mod0un6.jpg

And this was my initial victim.. But I changed my mind. For two reasons; first I dont know how good i can cut this beauty and second I want to be able to change the screen angle as I use the LCD.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/1269/mod1xd8.jpg

And I bought wifey a nice gift so she will complain less as I work on my mod ;)
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/1927/mod2as0.jpg

Soon she felt a little sorry as I emptied the case and start cutting it with my dremel :)
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/853/mod3po4.jpg

Yep LCD fits in the alu case perfectly.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/2434/mod4wj5.jpg

OK.. Now this tiny piece can rest in its temporary housing till I finish the alu box... (This was taken before VGA mod so its a s-video connection there)
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/7682/mod5tj3.jpg

I will soon add an on/off switch, drill holes for s-video in (in case i intend to use it in the future), power and VGA cables in.. Some plexi work will be needed for the back cover of the box.. We will see how it will look..

Thats all for now.. I might end up with a crappy LCD housing but worths to give it a try..

i first did this mod with 1 lcd and a matrox mistique, getting a good picture was as easy as setting 640x480i(arcade), and then moving refresh rate a little (always interlaced), then i moved to 2 lcds, and a gf5500fx (pci too).

it was still easy, but half the time i start my computer, it worked, the other half it would freeze during the loading of the first apps/drivers/whateve after i ge to see my desktop.

i decided to try with an ati radeon 7000 now.... and i CANT get my lcd to show anything (only when i dont use powerstrip, i get the cut in half moving screen, after i lower refresh, or set the arcade resolution, image goes crazy :()

has anyone tried it with a similar card ?
ill try DFI suport to see if they know whats wrong with my other pci card, this one doesnt hangs my os, but doesnt work with my lcds...

pd: i just bought 2 24lc21, they were hard to find over here in argentina)

EDIT: ok, this is weird, with the 7000, i get an image that looks awfully deformed, but my mouse ponter looks perfect (that when i switch to arcade with c-sync and interlaced enabled). il keep working.

edit2: ok ,after reading this thread again, i saw 2 guys that got their 7000 to work, but never posted how, i sent pms just in case :P
the card is listed as compatible, but many people failed to ue it :(

EDIT3: fixed XD

BTW, here are my powerstrip settings for the radeon.

disabled tilling (dunno what that is, never needed to with other cards) and now it works on my ati radeon 7000 XD

In my first soldering and connection I was able to update edid on 24LC21 eeprom.. But as the cable i was using (a VGA cable stripped off an old monitor) was really crappy I decided to use CAT5 cable. Now the signal is much better on LCD.. The surprise for me was I had to re-adjust my timings after renewing my cable.. Now I have another issue though..I also replaced my 24LC21 eeprom (it was easy to fing them here in Istanbul/Turkey) Now I cant get to writeEDID on this one.. All my connections are double checked and everything is the same as before.. Weird.. I only dont remember if I had Ati Tray Tools running at first time I wrote on first eeprom.. Now I tried unloading almost everything but still no go..

I have it running on Matrox Mystique PCI at the moment.. But it sucks a lot of CPU power and it becomes a pain to use the pc when watching TV on the LCD.. So I need to write on the eeprom and I will be able to use the LCD on my Radeon X1600Pro AGP..
elmodder 10th November 2006, 21:43 Quote
im in the proces of writing to the eeprom (i still dont know how to convert the powerstrip settings into edid data, but im not there yet either).

on my radeon 7000, it tells me theres no valid edid at all.

if i put my lcd on the second port of my 7600gt, it sees a valid edid in port #1 (psone lcd) and port#2 (dell2007wfp).

now i have to learn how to get the correct settings into an edid :/
elmodder 10th November 2006, 23:33 Quote
ok, the 7000 refuces to write/read/SEE the eeprom.

even after i have programed it, its like its not there for it, which is kinda good, cause im having problems with WHAT to write to it :/

i have an NTCD lcd, and after writing to the eeprom, my 7600gt thinks the lcd must work @640x960

no image is displayed, and powerstrip cant even acces the custom timings :(

any kind soul who has a .dat of an NTSC lcd ?

EDIT:
i was using the video intup definition in digital, that caused de ugly res bug or whatever it was, now i used analog, the psone lcd is detected without the dummy trick, but it refuces to use the tweaked res :(

i spent all the afternoon failing (i even accidentaly wrote the psone edid to my dell... lucky me i have more diplays available, and that i had a copy of my dells original edid).
ill try again tomorow
elmodder 11th November 2006, 18:49 Quote
well, still in the same place, my pc recognices the lcd without the dummy, but something is not right and its like my settings are not beiong used.

im not really sure what to use on this tabs ofthe edid editor:
basic display parameters
color / established timings
standard timings

i took the edid from an lcd and 2 crt monitors i have, and tryed many diferent things, with no luck.

then, in the detailed timings tab, i set what i have on powerstrip, but there are some options that i dont know what to set them too (not numerical ones).
Also, there are 4 bloks there, i haven o idea what to do with the other bloks.

i tried many things, copied setings from others, with no luck

anyone with a valid edid (pal or ntsc) would really help me. (the one on firingnow is recogniced as invalid by my phonex edid designer, i have v1.3)
Gin0TheCop 11th November 2006, 20:51 Quote
You are luckier than me elmodder.. At least you can write on your eeprom.. Where are you getting 5V from? As shown on firingnow.com? If so which part of the back of the LCD is the positive and which is the ground? Because on my first attempt I used power from my PSU but since I am trying to use the power from the back of the LCD its a no go...
What I had done on my first attempt with the EDID was; I copied the raw edid data from firingnow.com.. Opened the text editor, copied the data into it and saved the file as a .dat file. Then I opened the file with phoenix and only changed the numbers in detailed timings tab on block one as seen in my pwerstrip timings. As I was only testing if I could write on the eeprom, my timings were not the correct ones so I dont know if it would work with the correct timings as I can not write on my eeprom anymore..
elmodder 11th November 2006, 21:05 Quote
the +5v is from one of the top legs of the "black thing"

the bottom fat one is ground.

i sometimes get a write protected message, but restarting my pc fixes it somehow.

edit:

ok, doing that the ,dat file generated is accepted by phoenix XD

im playing a dota match now, ill check if it works later, if it does, youll be my hero XD
Gin0TheCop 11th November 2006, 22:57 Quote
Ok just let me know the result... Now I am 100% sure my connections and soldering is fine.. And I dont know why the hel I can not write on this eeprom..I am stuck now..
elmodder 11th November 2006, 23:25 Quote
when i get the write protected msg, sometimes i try agian ,and it works (also, some times, when i try to update the edid, i get the option to open a file as soon as i click on update edid, but sometimes i get the no valid edid found, scan bus thing).

loading the file johny used did nothing, the info is written to the edid, i can get it back with phoenix or powerstrip, but my screen remains @640x480 60hz :(

edit: ok, my eeprom decided to be write protected now (im positive that i didnt write to it more than 200 times yet :/)

EDIT2: ok, my matrox mystic (that sucks and i dont want to use XD) was able to write to my edid.

NOW, i thought it wasnt working, but... someone should have told me that the 640x480i would be available on the advanced properties, but not aoutomatically set :/ (i feel dumb)

for some reason my radeon 7000 cant see the edid, no read, no write, so i guess i must hope that my gf5500fx keeps working :/
Gin0TheCop 12th November 2006, 07:49 Quote
Yes it was the same for me when i succeeded to write my edid. It would give the option to open the edid file immediately after i choose update edid. Or sometimes it would allow me to scan the bus routine. But now everytime i try, it will scan the bus, tell me that it found an eprom with an invalid edid, and after choosing the file, shorting legs 7 and 8 and hitting ok button..Its a relatively long pause and i get the write protected message.. It is the same routine on my every single attempt..
elmodder 12th November 2006, 15:06 Quote
that sucks.

shorting those pins did nothing with my 7600gt when my eeprom decided to be write protected.

my radeon 7000 seems to not suport "seeing" the eeprom/edid

my matrox mystique could write to it, and after rebooting, i could select the custom res from the advanced properties and it worked.

when i changed to my gf5500fx, on the dvi out, it was like i had selected dvi out on the edid designet instead of VGA, the resolution was detected as 640x960i (no image of course).

i modified the edid a little, but the eeprom was write protected again :/
i changed the lcd to the vga port (i had it on the dvi one cause i have 2 lcds and i had the timings for the dvi port on this one), and i could write to it again, but im back to square one, my computer ignores the information on the edid, or it accepts most of it, but it refuces the interlaced part (even if it says 30hz interlaced on the advanced tab )
Gin0TheCop 12th November 2006, 15:41 Quote
I will consider myself lucky if i could write anything on my eprom... So i can get rid of the Mytique and use the LCD on DVI out of my ATI Radeon X1600Pro with powerstrip..

EDIT 1: Uninstalled PowerStrip re-installed it.. Still no good..
elmodder 12th November 2006, 17:27 Quote
if you just want to use the dvi out, build a monitor dummy or whatever its called, really easy, and jsut a swap each time you start your computer (thats what ive been doing al along, but doing it with 2 dummys is tireing :P )

Components needed to build the VGA dummy:

3 resistors (75 ohm)
1 HD15 male connector (or a ripped cable from an unworking monitor)
NOT MANDATORY: cover for the HD15 (similar to DB9) for a clean VGA dummy finish

Tools needed:

Iron

Building the device is as simple as it can get - carefully soldering a 75 ohm resistor between pins 1-6 at the back of the HD15 connector, doing the same with pins 2-7 then again with 3-8. Once all is done, covering the final result might be wise to avoid eventual shorts between VGA pins.

file:///E:/Importante%20PC/lcd%20de%20play/Modasylum_Com_files/thumb.jpg

now, lets go over the proces of the eeprom mod:

1: build the hardware > done
2: modify an edid > done (???)
3: write the eeprom
4: reboot

thats it ? windows automatically detects the 640x480 interlaced resolution ? or do i have to set it ? it was ok on the mystique (wrong timings tho, i used the ones for my "non edid detecting" radeon :P), but on the other cards, when i reboot, windows uses 640x480 60hz, or some weird 640x960, but never the correct more :(

do i need to write a custom driver with powerstrip or something ?

edit: did you try using your x1600 for writing the eeprom ? switching vgas solved my problem last time (the write protected one only tho :P), shorting the pins did nothing.

edit2: i dont understand whats happening. If i set the resolution to 640x480 interlaced, windows offers me only 640x480@60hz non interlaced, or 640x960@30hz interlaced (960 is 480 + 480)
if i use the edid from johny, i get 720x550@50 hz, or 720x1080 interlaced -_-

so i thought, lets set the scond value to 480/2, but that gave me 640x480@50hz and no interlaced oprion :/
i think that something i must be doing is wrong, too bad i dont know what :/
elmodder 12th November 2006, 19:32 Quote
i keep getting weird results :(

this is what i curently have in my edid, if anyone wants to take a look at it, ill apreciate it XD

http://img53.imageshack.us/my.php?image=edidcorrectornotyk9.jpg

this are the options windows offers me after i write the edid.

http://img453.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitledcc0.jpg

this is what powerstrip reads from the lcd (when i tell it to read directly from the lcd)
http://img234.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitledjs6.jpg

here you can see how the vertical active pixels are locked to 960 even tho i chose 480 on the edid designer :(

Gin0TheCop 12th November 2006, 22:12 Quote
My understanding was once you succesfuly updated your edid into your eeprom.. It should work without any other windows based adjustments needed. When I look into your screenshots, I see that you are not using c-sync? What I ve read from the topics on this mod was, it is not possible to get a proper image from the lcd without c-sync. And c-sync is not an option with most Nvidia cards..

Anyway.. At my first attempts the same was happening to me as well. The resolution wouldnt change under advanced timings tab even if I changed it form windows or first configuration screen of PowerStrip.. After my second soldering and number of trials (i really dont know how i did it as i ve been tempering with this stuff for days now) I can set the resolution (add new and all) without any problems. But still no luck updating the edid.. (By the way when I had that resolution setting problem the update edid function was working as you described above).. Now I truly suspect this has something to do with windows registry.. I might be wrong ofcourse but i will try to find another computer with an ATI card and try to update my edid on that computer. I cant be bothered to re-install windows from scratch as I have so many software and setting and all to do if I follow that route..

And yes I did try to write on my eeprom via my x1600pro several times..
elmodder 13th November 2006, 01:36 Quote
its funny that my ati card doesnt see the eeprom.

the mod works kind of better with my mystique that suports c-sync (using c-sync with my ati card trashes everything tho XD)

with powerstrip, and by conecting the c-sync pin of the psone lcd to both h and v sync pins of the vga cable, i can get a perfect image, but maybe it wont work with this mod because of this ? (no csync suport) "?

i have to reinstall windows cause now half the times i load powerstrip, my system freezes :/

too bad we are the only guys doing this now :(

i think the hardware part of my mod is right cause i can write to the did and windws detects the lcd without the dummy, and also, it kinda worked on the mystique.
maybe the edid mod wont work without powerstrip without c-sync suport.

now i have a rotating screen on the lcd, its gotten better, i think :P

on the edid designer i have composite selected, did you find anything weird other thatn that ? XD

pd: maybe you can get a new 24lc21 :P (im using a 24lc21b, the only thing available here, it seems identical).

reading the 24lc21 datasheet i say that there is a new model, 24lcs21A, thi one has a pin for write protection, maybe we could ask hony or some other guy with knowledge in electronics to modify the mod to use it ? XD
Gin0TheCop 13th November 2006, 07:46 Quote
I have 5 of those 24LC21s.. As they costed pennies I bought number of them just in case.. And I am using the 3rd one now with no luck.. :D.. I might though resolder the first one with wrong edid data so I can use the LCD together with powerstrip via my X1600pro and no more dummy route...
elmodder 13th November 2006, 15:54 Quote
they are worth u$s 4 here (thats 12.** argentine pesos), i only bought 2 (one for each lcd) :p

i think that maybe, my nvidia drivers can be getting in the way o this mod, cause they have an option for setting timings similar to powerstrip, but after you use it, they change in weird ways :p
elmodder 13th November 2006, 19:39 Quote
here is a pic of the lcd with the settings that DONT work on the gf cards, but it does work on the mystique (the screen is a little out of "focus" cause the timings on the edid were for the gf5500fx, not for this card).

http://img73.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01469wr8.jpg

i HOPE that i have a driver problem and reinstalling windows will help me XD

with the same edid settings, i have the box for showing non suported refreshes greyed out, and i can only see 60, and on the ADAPTER tab, on list all modes, on this card, if i remove the check on hide unsuported modes, 640x480 30hz interlaced apears, on the nvidia cards, i cant check or uncheck the beforementioned box, and i only have 2 kinds of resolutions (again, same did settings):
640x480 @ 60 hz @ diferent color qualities.
640x960 @ 30hz interlaced @ diferent color qualities (i wonder were this stupid and weird resolution came from).

i dont know why my ati cards refuce to see the eeprom, i see that you have a pal screen, so im guessing that you have the ddc +5v (pin 10 or nine on the vga cable) conected ?
Gin0TheCop 13th November 2006, 21:43 Quote
Yes mine is a PAL and yes my pin 9 on VGA is connected to pin 10 on LCD... Today after booting my pc. I tried to update the EDID again.. Weird it said its updated successfully and pc needs to reboot.. I followed but was a false alarm.. Didnt write a single bit on my eeprom.. I am almost sure now this is a software issue.. I will hopelessly keep trying.. Cos I dont want the dummy route each time I boot and also dont want to use Mystique as its way too slow and sucks most of my cpu power when used.. Are you using a c-sync converter together with your Nvidia? That should do the trick as far as i ve read on the forums..
elmodder 13th November 2006, 21:55 Quote
nope, im only conecting v-sync and h-sync to the c-sync cable of the lcd. ive done that since i saw rudyatek guide, it works with the mistique, (without activating c-sync), with the ati and with the nvidia cards :p

normally, putting my samurize config on the lcd when using my matrox mystique used a los of cpu, but now without powerstrip it doesnt (weird :P)

ill buy a matrox pci card with suport for dual monitor for 16 u$s and see if i can make it work with it (also, ill try to change my gf5500fx driver to the one provided by microsoft).

did you try diferent versions of powerstrip ?
Gin0TheCop 13th November 2006, 22:11 Quote
nope i am using only 3.65... I didnt know Rudyatek's mod would work with nvidia cards...

Then you connect that blue wire to VGA 13 and 14 right.. If so are you also connecting VGA 14 to EEPROM 7 ??
elmodder 14th November 2006, 09:59 Quote
i conected it, not to the eeprom directly, but the cables are conected :p

if i diconect it i need to enable c-sync wiht the matrox card, or the image rolls XD (with it conected, it works).

i tried disconecting it when the mod didnt work, with no luck (on my gf7600gt, if i disconect it, the image doesnt roll, it just apears in a diferent height each time :P )
