@justblair

To be honest, I don't know - I use mine with a laptop so it is always the secondary monitor.
I doubt that it would initialise correctly as a primary monitor in the initial boot since that uses text-modes that are at fixed resolutions. Also, the LCD is only 320x240 native resolution and is showing an interpolation of the full picture. Even if it does initialise correctly, you probably won't be able to read it!

I have only one card on this computer, so it makes configuration a bit difficult. the best I have gotten it uses these settings,
Code:
PowerStrip timing parameters:
640x480=640,22,96,42,480,16,2,27,25164,304

Generic timing details for 640x480:
HFP=22 HSW=96 HBP=42 kHz=31 VFP=16 VSW=2 VBP=27 Hz=60

VESA detailed timing:
PClk=25.16 H.Active=640 H.Blank=160 H.Offset=6 HSW=96 V.Active=480 V.Blank=45 V.Offset=16 VSW=2

Linux modeline parameters:
"640x480" 25.164 640 662 758 800 480 496 498 525 +hsync +vsync

The only problem is that this provides two half screens, the same thing twice, with a big black bar in the middle. I also for some reason, cannot change the refresh rates low enough. I think this is why I can't get settings right, but that's as low as they all go.

off hand does anyone know if the LCD works with an Nvidia geForce FX 5600 Ultra? I have this card an in my new rig it will be my secondary card. ??

Thank you

Hey guys, I came across this info and forum today, and am eager to find myself a LCD and mod it up. WHere would I find the latest info on this mod? I think I Have enough info and would want to do the VGA cable, what I was wondering what about the Dcc pin? do you need to add +5VDC to get the monitor to swictch on?

The DCC pin is needed on the PAL versions. The NTSC dont require it to switch on.

Ok.. as far as I can tell the 24LC21 is working as it should. I am able to update the eeprom. And when I reboot, I am getting an image without the help of powerstrip. I started with trying the file that Johnny Gadget included with his tutorial.

The result I get is an image that is bigger than it should be which scrolls slowly from top to bottom. It is larger than it should be, and elongated in the vertical plane. It loops on itself like the image Dragongc got.

So I thought, it was Johnny's timings that were the problem. I loaded the file from the firingnow site into phoenix and adjusted them with my own timings derived from powerstrip. Still have the same image

PowerStrip timing parameters:
768x576=768,0,64,80,576,4,6,28,14032,2168

Generic timing details for 768x576:
HFP=0 HSW=64 HBP=80 kHz=15 VFP=4 VSW=6 VBP=28 Hz=25

VESA detailed timing:
PClk=14.03 H.Active=768 H.Blank=144 H.Offset=-16 HSW=64 V.Active=576 V.Blank=38 V.Offset=4 VSW=6

Linux modeline parameters:
"768x576" 14.032 768 768 832 912 576 580 586 614 interlace +hsync +vsync

This is the txt file that I exported from powerstrip...

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h219/justblair/PHOENIX1.jpghttp://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h219/justblair/PHOENIX2.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h219/justblair/PHOENIX5.jpg

And these are the settings that I input into phoenix.

Loaded the new file into the eeprom, but I got the same result. What have I done wrong? Please help, I'm stuck.

BTW here is the pcb I made to house the power supply and the eeprom. It has a temperature monitor on it as well.

Thanks to Johnny, Brinx and Aldion for their posts. I wouldn't have known that it was possible to do this, let alone where to start my design...

hmmm, you've got me there. The EEPROM doesn't actually do anything, it just stores parameters that are used by the hardware/driver combination. All pheonix and powerstrip do is over-ride the EEPROM settings where found. If your setup works in powerstrip but not in EEPROM then one or the other is fibbing. Have you tried reading back the EEPROM file and verifying that it has properly written? I note that you have used a smd EEPROM - is it a 5V compatible type? some of the tiny stuff works at 3.3V and may not be reacting correctly to different logic levels and i2c clock speeds.

let me know if any of this helps.

I have checked the datasheet. As far as I can tell, the voltages are the same for both package types. 2.5-5.5v is what it quotes. I can not see anything there that gives different specifications for each package other than sizes.

I loaded the datasheet back into phoenix. It has the same pages in it as I loaded up. I'm thinking it must be the way I have interpreted them when I programmed through phoenix.

I thought that your screen was pal, but you use 720 rather than 768, Could it be the detailed timings that I am using? But why would they work in ps?

I'm frustrated because DragonGC seems to have had this issue, and conquered it with brinx's help. I checked, but neither has logged on for a bit. Time to switch on the search light with the bat emblem painted on it!

I feel that I am close, wish I was better educated in this stuff rather than just a datasheet surfer!

Thanks for looking...

On the day that everything was supposed to finally come together, my PSone LCD PCB has decided to die. I think it was mainly from all of my tampering to get things working how I wanted them to and connected the right way.

I do have pics however of how this mod can work in a smaller case...

I have another PSone screen on order to finally complete this mod.

P.S. Thats a killer heatsink you have on your voltage regulator justblair :D

After a divorce and moving into a new house, I have finally completed my PS LCD Mod. I used a Antec Super LAN Boy Case. All I have left is to install the DVD-Rom, and tweak the video settings. Basically, the screen is installed in the case door with plexi-glass protection. I still have access to all three 5.25 bays.

The black paint is a textured coat, kind of like a sand paper feel. Nearly all the wires are rapped in cable sleeving, even the CPU fan cable. I am a little cheesed my Cold Cathode Ray controller died on me right before I took these pictures.

This screen will be a extended desktop that will have computer stats and MP3 visualizations. I built a seperate plastic case for the power supply conversion that takes up a 5.25 bay.

Next project, network the office to the living room, then hook up the MC-PC to my HDTV & Entertainment System.

Here's some pictures of the 95% final product. I'll see of I can get dome free time this weekend and post some more detailed pics of the inside of the case door and power supply converter.

God bless the Dremel!!

I've just taken one of these apart. The blue board on the top contains a chip to seperate composite video into RGB.

The green board underneath it is a Casio LCD driver board.

Here's the pinouts

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=805186

Note:-

I've now tried to get this working twice without success. Seems there's a little more than meets the eye. Competition pro have modified the Casio board by wiring into the 3 memory chips. They also have some unidentified chip on thier board and a hi-res timer chip. I'm sure this has something to do with refresh. However, even when wiring the memory chips back into their proper inputs on the casio board, I still can't get this to sync.

Now resigned to using it with composite video until I get a better lcd.

This will probably only interest anyone building a projector, but I've found what I *think* is the correct extension cable (15cm) for the sony screens:

RS Components
It's £1.60... just a TAD cheaper than Lumenlab's offering!

Great mod.. And hopefully I will start mine as soon as I get my Sony PSOne LCD and Matrox Mystique VGA card.. I wastrying to figure out if the panel will fit in my silverstone LC17 case and did a rough sketch.. Maybe some other people might need it too.. Any body knows the depth of the lcd together with the board?

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7471/dimensionsjpgcv0.jpg

And its going to be something like this on SilverStone LC17 Case:

After two weeks of reading I have decided to go through as mentioned in the schema below. While I am still waiting for the LCD and the Matrox Mystique PCI card I tried to draw a diagram of my planned soldering.. Hope I got it all correct..

Regards...

EDIT : I ve changed the schema as i got the eeprom's legs wrong in the previous one..

Hi again.. I received my Sony LCD (PAL) and did the VGA mod.. What i wonder is when you check the pinouts at http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/psxav.htm it says pin (6) is for sync. But at starfox's page VGA pin(13) is connected to pin(5).. Any ideas which one is the correct one?..
By the way s-video option works fine but i still couldnt find the correct timings for VGA yet.. Been doing the dummy way and after a while when i try to adjust timings my screen will go blank with backlight on. I wonder this could be an isue with those pins (5) or (6)? Besides when i get to the page in powerstrip where you adjust timings the interlaced box is always unchecked. When i click on it the pixel clock goes high and the box remains unchecked. I am using an ATI X1600pro and connecting the LCD via DVI port with the adapter supplied. All I could get till now over VGA is a scrambled image on the screen.(Like flickering 3 coloumns of the image )

need to to the VGA mod, i think i'll use the bit-tech guide (or shouldn't i)
and make a 12V to 7.5V mod (any1 have a good one?)
Springs 26th October 2006, 23:24 Quote
best thing for the power mod is to get a ps one car adapter and change the lighter end of the plug to a molex as they both run +12V
Gin0TheCop 27th October 2006, 07:36 Quote
I have done the starfox's wiring. And also added a 24LC21 EEPROM to the unit so now i dont have to use a dummy monitor and my PC recognizes the LCD whenever i boot it. Still working on timings. The timings (or anything close to it) of starfox didnt work for me. I spent like 7-8 hours on timing adjustment still no good.. Wondering its an issue related to my soldering skills. I double checked and it looks ok to me with no shorts and all..
IaKoVl 28th October 2006, 23:59 Quote
how can i check the screen work without doing the mod?
Gin0TheCop 29th October 2006, 00:36 Quote
OK I finally got mine working.. I received Matrox Mystique 220 PCI card today. And installed it on one of my PCI slots. Then made PCI primary display from setup first. Then installed the latest drivers. Then form the setup I made the AGP slot primary again (or else ati try tools wouldnt start). And now it works like a charm. I am using 768X576 resolution as mine is a PAL version. And my timings are;
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/1482/ss768x576gt8.jpg

IaKoVl : I think best way to test it without the VGA mod is to try s-video connection. Thats what I did. Simplu connected it via s-video cable and now I also now how much better the picture is after the vga mod..

I only have 2 issues to deal with now.. First I cant get DVD's appear on LCD yet. Theres a black box where the movie should appear. And other thing is I can't update EDID to the 24LC21 eeprom.. If i can load my timings to eprom i will not need to load powerstrip... But it works perfectly as it is now except the DVD issue..

My first plan was to mod my Silverstone HTPC case but I am changing my plans.. I will build a seperate box for the lcd.. And guess what I will use an aluminium make-up stuff box and yeah I bought that to my wife as a gift so everyone is happy..
