On the first graph of the BF:BC2 I think the two nvidia GTS450 cards have been mixed up (the stock clocked card is faster than the overclocked TOP card).

So much fail.

Unless it's £80, in which case it's pretty win.
kenco_uk 13th September 2010, 10:28 Quote
Agreed; they need to be around that price, considering where the 460 is.

Article: "The Steam Survey also indicates that the uptake of HD5700-series cards hasn’t been great, as only 6 per cent of systems have a DX11-compatible OS and GPU while 56 per cent have Windows 7 and no DX11-compatible GPU."

I think you need to go back to the survey and have a look again at the results before making a statement like this.

The overview shows that the HD5700-series has 3.19% of ALL GPUs surveyed, similar to the HD5800-series and the GTX260-series, and still growing healthily. OTOH, no Fermi based Nvidia cards show up in the list, which means that the number surveyed must be lower than the 0.53% of the FX5200 at the bottom.

When looking at the DX10/11 GPUs, the HD5800 and HD5700 are at the very top with 6.02% and 5.84% of DX10/11 capable GPUs respectively. Compare this to the 5.79% of the best selling HD4800-series and Nvidia's offerings GTX480 (0.74%), GTX470 (0.88%), GTX650 (0.18%), GTX460 (0.64%)and GTX260(2.93%), to cherry-pick a few, I would say the HD5700-series is selling VERY well according to the Steam survey.

Further, the sentence seems to imply that the the lack of HD5700 sales is responsible for the lack of DX11 capable OS and GPU combinations, but surely that cannot be what you meant because that would require a conclusion based on no evidence whatsoever, and ignoring all the other reasons that could result in such a situation. And you wouldn't do that.

How does it fold?
Hustler 13th September 2010, 10:56 Quote
The whole Gfx card market stinks of market manipulation TBH........only 2 players in any form of commerce means it's ultimately a comfortable posistion for both of them...

ATI's ongoing price gouging with the 5850 (still the same price as when it launched 12mths ago....i mean hello!!!... WTF is that all about)....proves there is little genuine competition in this sector....

Having said that, you can buy these for less than £100, and there are some rather tasty figures going around for its SLI performance.....so not a complete failiure, although its doubtful many of the people this card is aimed at will have the Mobo required for Sli.......

What's the folding performance like on this? I want to put one in my server since its PSU has only one PCI-E power connector, so the 5770 and 460 aren't really options for me.
Domestic_ginger 13th September 2010, 11:20 Quote
5770 has one power connector. 5750 is another option; the 512mb models must be pretty cheap now.

The good news is that nV can finally put the G92 chip to bed! unfortunately this is not very much better.
memeroot 13th September 2010, 11:30 Quote
is there any card worth upgrading to from an ageing 9800gx2?

When it comes to folding, ATI isn't really an option! :P
Found this over at Rage3D, GTS 450 puts out about 8000 PPD, 9000 when overclocked: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?p=1336365651

So this card is not actually competing with the 5770 but with the 5750!

And nVdia have brought the 460-768 down in price to go up against the 5770 ...a card that's been readily available for 11 months!

And the hd6xxx's are now just weeks away.... I'm too old to use the phrase "epic fail" but does succinctly fit.

Nah, you got your releases mixed up. GTX2xx series with rebranded GF8/9 parts for mainstream and budget parts was epic fail. Fermi so far isn't doing too bad, even if it's a bit late. At least GF104 and GF106 seem to be proof that NVidia hasn't completely lost it, as Fermi (GF100) seems to actually scale down this time.

I'd call it 'careful recovery' :)
mi1ez 13th September 2010, 12:26 Quote
The SLI scaling on this card is immense from what I've read (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/geforce-gts-450-gf106-radeon-hd-5750,review-31992-4.html) giving budget gamers a good upgrade path, but this card really powerful enough to justify it's predicted price.
memeroot 13th September 2010, 12:36 Quote
sli seems to be working great so why no GX2 cards... waiting to trounce SI?
fingerbob69 13th September 2010, 13:21 Quote
I don't think so Elledan! The mid range HD6xxx parts are expected out first. To call GF104/6 a little late when AMD's part been out 11 months has to go down as the understatement of the year! And the 450 IS competing against the 5750, not the 5770...

From guru3d

"It's not that the GTS 450 is not interesting, no contrary, it's just ATI that is dominating the segment and can adapt any move NVIDIA makes. See, ATI is simply going to lower the price on its Radeon HD 5750 and 5770, and that will shift, reposition and dominate the entire dynamic of price versus performance and thus market repositioning."

and:

"But make no mistake, the Radeon HD 5770 overall is the better performing product and AMD already informed us that they will be lowering prices, equal to the GTS 450."

From Tomshardware

"it’s genuinely difficult to get excited about something we saw from AMD 11 freaking months ago, priced to match. "

And from Anandtech:

"The GTS 450 isn’t competition for the 5770; at best it’s as fast, at the worst it’s as slow as a 5750."

nVidia fanbois can shout all they want but they're only talking to themselves.
mrbens 13th September 2010, 13:24 Quote
Seems pointless unless they lower the price. Might as well spend a few more £ for the 460 768MB.
Hakuren 13th September 2010, 13:50 Quote
I just don't get it. Why nVidia shooting itself again in the foot (this time healthy one). GTX480/470 range was/is a miserable disaster (that was first foot gone). Performance yes, but not at all cost. Then they release GTX460. By all accounts a fabulous product, in particular when running in SLI configuration. Now instead attempting to dislodge ATI from 5770-market-share they should release dual GTX460 card. It is so simple. I bet there is a lot of people who would just love to buy such product. 2 GPU on 1 card, one less slot wasted on motherboard, easier to cool with both chips in the same place. Dual-460 - total win-win for everybody. GTS450 is total fail - in particular with ATI Rads 6xxx just around the corner. End of story.

Nice review, seems like the wise option would be to save up some extra cash for a 768mb 460 as a minimum.

It will be interesting to see what effect the Radeon 6xxx series will have on the current ATi/Nvidia prices though. Bearing in mind that the price of the 5xxx series hasn't really moved much since launch, you would expect the equivalent 6xxx parts to launch at similar levels, but with improved performance. A 5850 at £150-£160 in a few weeks might not be an unreasonable expectation.

They are also selling a pre-built system with SLI GTS450's as well.

I think the admins need to come in here and shut up a few people.

fingerbob69, you are arguing about a low end card that's been hammered by the GTX460 768mb & 1GB which also went on to hammer everyother ATi card upto and including the 5850. In every level including price, performance, build quality, cooling. How can you ATi fanbois still cling on to the "best bang per buck!" statement when that one card dumps on you in one go.

At £100 the 250 is too pricey but at £80-£90 it makes more sense.

As to the unrelated 6XXX series already sprouted here by the ATi fanbois, it's just a knee jerk reaction by AMD to send out a "new product" which is a rehash of the 5XXX which was a rehash of the 4XXX but with DX11.

Who cares?

The GTX460 is a great card, and if you are looking for a card in that price range, there is no AMD alternative. I have recommended it without hesitation. But it isn't a compelling choice for everyone, and if I was in the market I'd go for the 5850.

Having said this, the HD68**-series is going to pee all over it, if not because of it's own price/performance, then because all those HD58**-series are going to be sold off at lower prices once it launches.
