I'd buy it just for the sexiness of the card to be honest.
Quote EnglishLion 27th May 2009, 11:39
It's a pity they couldn't have got the power requirements down so that it didn't need a pcie power connector. Looks like the 4670 is still the king of the 'no power cable' hill.
Quote xaser04 27th May 2009, 11:57
Is it possible to add a HD4870 512mb to these benchmarks (even if its results are from a older review) to get a comparison? The 512mb version can be picked up now for a little over £100 (£115 seems around the average from OCUK / aria) so it would be interesting to see what the additional £25-30 buys you in terms of raw GPU grunt.
Quote bogie170 27th May 2009, 12:40
How about benching the 4770 in crossfire compared with a 4850 crossfire and a single HD4870 X2?
Quote mystvearn 27th May 2009, 12:41
mm, the link of the price goes to the ASUS 4770 card which is out of stock.

Another thing is that, there is no way you can find 4770's now without paying more than £100+. They've all vanished...

Not sure how you are going to make the what should I buy June issue..

Not to derail this but, can i ask a quick question? How do i determine wether X memory clock counts as 2X or 4X effective?

Erm I've just checked and they both link to XFX cards?:| Which link was this - $ or £? Maybe the site in question changed something for while and has changed it back.

GDDR5 memory doubles the effective bandwidth of GDDR3 and GDDR4, as it increases the bandwidth per pin by a factor of 2.

Nice review, I'm interested in one of these now, I was gonna get the Sapphire card because I trust Sapphire :)
Anyway I was just wondering about your 7/10 value rating, don't you think it's a little low? I mean this is a card that can beat the 4850 on some benchmarks/games which retailed for £120 at launch =\ Not trying to be critical I've just never understood your value ratings ^_^
Quote Aleph Haz 27th May 2009, 15:31
I'm just a little confused by the SKU numbers...

If I want this card with the better cooler, I get the one with YDF7, right? Where YDFC and YDLC are the older coolers similar to the one seen in the Gigabyte review? The picture in the price link didn't serve to help me at all. :p
Quote flibblesan 27th May 2009, 15:45
Only 4770 cards I can find anywhere all have a different cooler. Where can I get the one in the review?
Quote isaac12345 27th May 2009, 16:53
I'm actually quite suprised by the gts 250's temperature at load. a 100 degrees is a LOT!

The £ link. Goes to Microdirect site, with the XFX card sold by asus which is out of stock. I think you should review the links to not just simply place links which have no stock?

So wait,

This card gets beaten by a GTS 250?
So that's actually just a 9800GT.. no wait, 8800GT in disguise?

Are you guys really telling us now that the best budget card to buy today still is the same card I recommended as a budget gamer card almost a full year ago?

Well, seeing as the card is faster than an "Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT 512MB".. no
Quote Combinho 27th May 2009, 18:27
GTS 250 is a 9800GTX+ which is an 8800 GTS (I think) - simples.

is there a way to determine which games will benifit from crossfire and which wouldn't? is it a general rule of thumb that all mainstream modern games do taje advantage of CF...

XFX card sold by Asus? Errm not sure when Asus acquired XFX but it doesn't say Asus anywhere on that page????

In relation to the SKUs...XFX told us that SKU numbers HD-477A-YDFC (standard box), or HD-477A-YDF7 (same as our X-shaped box) both have the same cooler and same accessories.

The SKU that will land you a cooler that IS NOT THE SAME is HD-477A-YDLC

As for stock, we've since learned that these cards (HD 4770's in general) are in very short supply although it was in stock when we wrote the article. You'll just have to keep your eyes open but we'll report back if we hear anything.

The best way would be to just take a look at some HD4770 CF reviews. ATI probably has a listing of games that work with crossfire somewhere, but the only way to know if it actually scales or not is to take a look at some actual numbers.
Quote Elton 28th May 2009, 04:08
Good review as always, what saddens me is the card still is stripped down from it's original cooling, which was, to me far better.

Still same price and it's XFX so can't argue with that.

Although I'd like a more minimalisitic shroud, eh, I'll just get rid of the sticker like i Did with HIS' ICE-Q HD4850 if I ever buy it.
Quote vanu 28th May 2009, 08:35
Why haven't you loaded the bios from the Asus Top 4770? It easily achieves 1Ghz/1Ghz core/memory and i think that this is what XFX 4770 is all about - overclocking beyond the limits where the regular cooler fails. It would be nice to see how far can it go.

Sorry about that, my mistake.

I think next what should buy hardware should focus on the supplies. Right now, I have ordered a 4770 which was available at time of ordering but finished when they processed my order. So basically, I'm on a waiting list. CCL computers say they will get a batch of 10 very soon, and I suspect that most have already been snapped up and waiting for CCL to deliver them. Looks like will get the 4770 next week.
