hmm only on some steppings and if using top notch hardware on everything .. otherwise 2.6 ghz will normally be what the 4400+ maxes out on

Which would make it equal to the FX-60 :)

Actually, faster, as you get the memory bandwidth from the increased HTT.

Keep in mind that the Toledo core, which both the 4800+ and FX-60 has, still have the same clock speed limits even with an unlocked multiplier. 3.0 GHz has not yet been achieved on air with this core, though Anandtech managed 2.8 GHz. Put it under water and see how things go

Ok for hardware I got a DFI Ultra D board with some premier OCZ 1GB kit(2x512mb), 7800GTX, X-Fi card (Fatality edtion), Hiper 580W SLi ready and 2x 12v rail. I think this gear alone will do. With my AMD 3K+ I was able top go from 1.8Ghz to 2.6Ghz when I switched over to water. Its maxed out around 2620ish MHz. I want a dual core maybe in the next coming months but do want to fork over to much money. I was hoping to go low end with the cheapest 1mb cache and then oc it, to the speeds of its big brother and my goal is now 2.8GHz.

So the idea is take a 4400+ with 1mb cache and make it, as good as the FX-60.

I apologise for the lack of overclocking, as I did in the Pentium XE 955 review too - the problem is that I literally didn't finish benchmarking for this review til 1am this morning, which meant the review wasn't finished until 3am. I was up at 6:30am and in Ascot house hunting for 10:30am. I've been working on this review since the 30th, pretty much flat out and that's just an idea of how much work was involved in re-testing every CPU here. :|

There will be some overclocking in a follow up article once things have settled down here. I've been out since 7:30am and just this minute walked through the door. Working 18 hour days and trying to moving house at the same time aint fun. :(

so does this mean that Intel is slowly creeping back into the race for speed? for a while AMD was dominating- but multitasking sure brought the FX-60 to its knees compared to the XE955. Its still bloody fast, but Intel sure has something going (i still plan to stay with AMD tho)

it got beaten in 1 multi-tasking benchmark, thats hardly being brought to its knees :\
if you look at the A64 X2 and the normal Pentium D (not the extremem edition) multi-tasking is going to be the same as the pentium D doesnt have hyper threading :)

Ouch. Oh well; this gives you a chance, provided you dont have too terribly much new hardware to play with, to make a big article on overclocking both systems to their absolute limits.

Out of curiosity, how many times do you run your benchmarks?

Now all I have to do is find someone to sell me one!! I'm holding off Ebaying this chip until I know for sure I can buy one. Then again, if I do a 7 day auction, do you all reckon that's all it will take for places to get stock?

Oh well... it's done. My FX57 is listed on Ebay... so lets hope I can buy one when mine sells!!!

Well dude I dont want to over-work you at all. You did a fine job at reviewing. Not many site reviewed this chip. Only the top few modding/computer hardware sites did with bit-tech right up there.

In the future if you have alot on your test bench you might want to send me a PM, I will love to help you review new products. I have been fieding for the chance to review products. All though my spelling and grammer will need to be edited. Nothing that MS Office 2003 can't fix though.

I dunno... Current retail steppings seem good for around 3.1GHz on water, and the 4800+ is still over £500, and it may not even reach 2.8 if the stepping is bad... I'm still leaning towards the FX60.

I think it's about time I get my cl0x0r on with my 3800+; I've been too lazy to really see what it can do - it's only at 2250 right now or something. Of course, I haven't been doing anything especially CPU-intensive recently, and I still need to double-check that dual-core hotfix (was great for a day or so, then it seemed to make everything slower, but that might be more with not rebooting for a month)

Yes. But no-one whos likely to buy and highly clock a 4xxx chip is likely not to clock an FX-60 are they now?

I run the shorter tests three times and the longer tests twice to verify that I'm seeing the right kind of numbers and also to get some kind of average, too.

my FX-53 doe's 2.8GHZ on air cooling and it's virtually the same as the FX-57
i think i will wait till socket AM2 come's out till my next upgrade ive heard that DDR 2 should be pretey immpressive by then

It sure was a nice review. One thing though, you got the price all wrong. One month on and that chip is still priced at or around £738.6 inc VAT in the UK, NOT 600.

No idea how much it cost in the US, but I'm sure it's (as usual) a lot cheaper there.
