ugh they always bring out an uber cooler after i buy my GFX cards
oh well, the x1900xt isn't THAT bad in my experience ... perhaps ATI could sell some of these coolers to those that cant afford another £400 for the latest card <_<

The new cooling solution is fantastic and I'm seriously considering getting hold of one of these babies for my own system. Now if only I could sneak one out of the office door. Hmm....
Im still on an agp 6800 and i am still going to wait for dx10. Thank god ati put a new cooler on, but in the end im still going to pull it off and go wet, no matter what card im going to use.

You could claim further testing or something
I was quite aware of this when I got my XTX. Terrible noise, but the low price I got mine at was too good of a deal.
Perhaps when they introduce mastercard/dongle-less Crossfire and DX10, I'll consider uprading again.
What a bloody good review, Tim, you've outdone yourself dude
Anyway, it'll be intresting to see if people who know are prepared to buy a card purely on faster memory basis, and the ring bus thang. Personally I'd be dubious, but the benchies are very intresting.
Overall, should anyone be buying extremely expensive cards with Vista around the corner? Personally I don't spend more then £200 on a graphics card, but with DX10 coming I'd be especially wary of buying anything expensive.
Oh 1 suggestion about your reviews, it would be nice at the end to give a short (like 1 paragraph) summery of the benchmarks, sure your review is thorough, but i'm not interested enough to read 12 pages of benchmarks, I'm sure lots of people will be, but i think that some people wont want to read it all

Still a great card though! Fab review... very concise, well written, and a great help if you're in the market for a new card. The kind of review that makes you proud to be part of bit-tech.

Exactly, im sure its also the kind of review that makes Tim proud with the result of his hard work. ;)
The review of the card is a great one, and probably the best one I have read, really indepth and clearly annotted and written... Nice Job....
Though GDDR4 is tempting and the new cooler cuts down no noise and increase cooling effiecency, I would'nt purchase one just on the merit of GDDR4, but I would consider it when DX10 comes a knockin'...
The 1950 also has some great features that nVidia should copy down or try to implemt in their cards as well... most notiably the single copper heat spreader...

You're right to some extent and that is why I said it would depend on what you've got in your system now. I'm very buy now, enjoy now, sell on later, because you could be waiting for a while before affordable DX10 cards turn up. It depends whether you want to lose a bit of money in a few months when you sell on a card that you buy now.
If there are games that you want to play at higher resolutions and detail settings, I reckon it's probably worth making the jump, even if it is for only six months or so.

We did used to do this, but then dropped it for some reason - I can't for the life of me remember why. I'll look into it, because (although I'd love everyone to read every page) I know that not everyone has the time to do so.

Just registered to say hi and congratulate you on your great article. The best X1950 review I have read so far!
Impressive job :)

Very informative, cheers.
They need a new card to kill the 7950X2. maybe in few months the X2900 will do the job.
