For the record I absolutely love my screen. I chose it over the Dell because I was very keen to have a silver bezel. I think that a black bezel on a monitor that large makes it overly dominating within the room. Furthermore, It looks nicer alongside my silver control pod for my logitech z-5500s.

Whilst I appreciate the stand isn't quite as nice as that for the dell, it does look substantially better in real life than it does in the review photographs. Ths samsung magic-bright settings are also very useful on a day to day basis. They allow you to rapidly change the brightness/contrast between a few presets. This means that you can have it at full brightness for a movie when you're sitting back from the screeen, or the ambient light is high, and rapidly dim it when you want to sit in a dark room at night doing something without giving yourselfa headache.

If that's the case then I guess the Dell 2407 I just ordered will go well with the dark grey control pod for my logitech z-5300s :D Hehe how cute

I always love coming to this site!
Such fantastic reviews!

I believe that monitor was on sale in Canada. I believe it was $30 off, but too bad I didn't get a chance to buy it :'( . O well, again great review

Was it a bad time to buy the 2005 then...

Oh well, I love Dell monitors, they're frakking sweet.

Can someone that owns one of these take a picture of TV or a movie playing while in the dark? Becuase watching TV on this monitor is something I do a lot I'd like to know how it's larger and newer sibling does.

Silver's a lot more dominating than black is, IMO (one further reason I'd never touch an Apple LCD in favor of a Dell). Mine is also sitting next to my z-5500 Control pod and looks fine, and matches the crappy cloth grills nicely.

Ramble - I'll see what I can do.

2005FPW is on the right. Ignore the 90* rotation. 2405FPW (left) isn't that washed out, it's just a bad picture. I think the movies playing are Troy (left) and Resident Evil (right). Blacks are notably better on the 24" but certainly not distracting on the 20". Draw your own conclusions.
Just avoid viewing at extreme angles - the blacks go purple (2005fpw only, not 2405fpw): http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Firehed/IMG_2493.jpg (yes, software rotation makes watching movies pointless, as it's about as wide as a 15" fullscreen)

on my 2005FPW the black is black at extreme viewing angles, yes there is a slight hint of purple (at very far out angles, like 100°)
Even then, why you would possibly watch at that angle, i dont know

You wouldn't - it's just something worth being aware of.

Been a while since I've logged in...Anywho, I'm wondering how a Dell 2007WFP is, are they similar panel wise to the 2407WFP? I'm new to the LCD world since I'm jumping ship from a 19" CRT.
Quote Firehed 25th June 2006, 09:55
That's what I did - 19" CRT to 2005FPW. If the 2007WFP is about the same in quality, which I'd expect with decent safety, at least on newer revision products, you won't be dissapointed.

I wish they skiped out the HDCP.. by buying this screen you fund DRM. Rember that.

The only thing that will stop HDCP, DRM and the frankly illegal activities of the RIAA and MPAA is a complete world boycott of all forms of music and video.

That includes complete cessation of:
* Buying music and video, whether is CDs, DVDs or legal online downloads.
* Watching films at the cinema
* Buying new audio or video equipment, TVs, DVDs, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, Sky, etc... are all out.

Only by crushing the industry with our consumer power and bringing it to its knees can we possibly hope to stop them.

Anyone fancy trying to organise a few billion people?

I 'm thinking about buying one of these monitors and was wondering if anybody here has used Dell's preffered account to pay for items on a monthly basis items and if there was any hassle or if its worth it price wise? I'm hoping to buy the monitor on the $25 a month plan because I'm in highschool and don't make that much.
Thanks

Sorry it's a bit late. I've put a few pics into a zip for you here. They've been pulled directly from the CF card in my camera, no processing or anything and the only source of light in the room at the time was the 2407.

personally i find it very unconfortable to watch a film from that kind of angle, generally its easiest on the eyes if your infront of the screen

I got my 2407FP today. OMG its HUUUUUUUUUUUGEE!!! I like it a lot... and this from a guy who swore he'd never go to LCDs.

I'm thinking of getting a Dell 2407, but I'm a bit concerned about how lower resolutions will look eg 1280x720 from a 360, or using lower PC resolutions for demanding games.

Does anyone think it'd be better to go for a lower native res monitor for this kind of use? I thought the 1680x1050 Viewsonic 2025 that bit-tech thought highly of might have been better for my PC use, but it lacks component inputs for my 360.

Is there a monitor like the Viewsonic that has a component input, or should I just go for the Dell?

(btw just signed up, but I've been reading bit-tech's great in-depth reviews for a while and love the site! :D )

you can generally select modes on the moniter, original size, scale (enlarges it but keeps the same aspect) or fit (makes it as big as possible) - i know you can do that on the 2005FPW ...
Ive used my PS2 on my 2005FPW, it looks ok - its not great, but then again im not looking at it from such a distance

considering the samsung has better picture quality and costs nearly the same don't you think I'd be smarter to go with that one instead of one that looks nice...

I see, the image manipulation should be useful. My monitor doesn't have that, so some of my 360 games' aspect ratios just look wrong.

I was just wondering about the actual image quality though, since even 1024res looks bad on my current 1280res TFT. It's so much sharper at native res. Do different monitors scale lower resolutions better than others? And how does the Dell hold up?

If I can find a smaller monitor with a lower native res and component inputs, I'll probably just go for that, as long as the image quality is good... It's just a drawback of LCD tech I guess. :D

1 big problem you are going to have is if your using a computer screen, your probably pretty close ... and then you can see it in alot more detail
On at TV screen they seem a bit more "blurred" when you get close, maybe there is an optimal distance, once you get x M away from the screen, the image is pretty good
Next up is that a tv resolution is like 640x480 (i believe - SD) start scaling that up onto a 1680x1050 screen (20") and you are making each 1 pixel into 2.625 (ok that wont quite happen, but i think you see what i mean)

Ok i took some pics 4 u
Pic showing the screen at HDLoader, and the settings im using

In a game

Edit
Oh yeh these are PC distances btw
Quote Firehed 2nd July 2006, 02:11
I'll take a few pics of both the 2005 and 2405 when running console games in a few minutes. Neither look spectacular at PC distances, but are pretty acceptable when viewed from a more typical TV distance.

Get a VGA cable for the 360 and use that with the Viewsonic ;)
Quote choupolo 2nd July 2006, 15:36
Thanks for the photos! :D

I can just about see how much clearer the settings and browser windows are compared to timesplitters being scaled up. So the Viewsonic will be noticably better (especially for 360 resolutions) at PC viewing distances?

I do have a VGA cable for my 360, so I may go for the Viewsonic. I've just heard that the component cable transmits better colours, whereas my Joytech VGA cable produces a noticably 'washed out' image. Perhaps it's just a case of getting a better vga cable?

Maybe the Dell 2407 isn't the ideal gaming monitor I thought it might be...

I'll be getting either Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" or SAMSUNG 214T 21.3".I never had widescreen monitor and i was wondering how does the applications for it look like? Its better apart from quallity and response time but wouldnt it be too big for me?the 21.3" samsuing seems fine in everything but response time (which is not very high tho) and it'll be perfect for gaming on 1600x1200 i just dont know what to pick up.Any info will be apreciated!
Quote Mr. Sunshine 8th July 2006, 00:41
Weird tangent question, but has anyone noticed that the 2405fpw doesn't seem to properly recognize widescreen mode at 480p resolution (via component input)?

I've noticed with both my Xbox360 and my Gamecube that 480p widescreen content still keeps the vertical bars. Frustrating. Anyone seen this/have a solution?
